Regrettably, all is Chaos in the pantry at the moment. I just flung things in there in my rush to unpack, and there's still some stuff from the temporary pantry-in-a-computer-box that must be stowed.

Well, thanks to you all, I got Irfanview loaded up, and once I got started resizing, there's no telling what I'll do next. And after looking at the the pictures y'all have posted, it's gotten me to thinking that I'd like to get some pretty serving things. I'm still using stuff from my first apartment for pity's sake...

It's a GE- Cafe line. I ended up going with all GE appliances because of the rebate (which paid for a big-girl food processor and a microwave), and because it's hard to get *anyone* to come fix things in this town, I figured there'd always be a GE-fixer hereabouts...eventually.

I have to re-learn what constitutes "medium" heat. After 12 years, I also have to learn not to wedge things under the pot handles so they sit flat on the burner.

To my surprise, I ended up with granite. I was convinced that I'd be getting Corian/equivalent. The GC looked woebegone, and asked me to at least come look at some granite, and I found precisely the slab I liked. It looks all-over black, but it's more like a freckled charcoal. We also considered Paperstone, which looked and felt terrific, but shipping costs killed that idea...

Humm...is the granite honed or polished in an unusual way? I generally see a high polish and I'll have to take another look, but your counters don't look like most granite that I see. Very nice, BTW. Then again, they do look black in the pictures and freckled charcoal sounds much more interesting.

I had never heard of paperstone, so I had to google it - it's really nice and I love the idea of how it's made - and there are dealers near me! Just one more thing to choose from...sigh.

Absolutely gorgeous! You must be so pleased.
My kitchen reno is probably 2 years away. I am, however in the middle of a sewing room reno, getting the whole shebang done. The interior roof drain leaked and I had to empty the room ( and all 1000+ cookbooks) so told DH I could not deal with moving the stuff again. We bought slate flooring for the entire space and have to store it until the kitchen is done. And we have no kitchen eating area/ family room because that's where all the cookbooks and fabric is stored....and probably will be until after Christmas.... : (
But it probably is best this way because I would never have spent the money in the sewing room otherwise. The kitchen WILL get done eventually.

I really liked how the paperstone felt under my hand--for some reason, it reminded me of leather (off the hoof, let me hasten to add). The colors (especially the darker ones) are best appreciated in person. Some suppliers have remnants, and I've read that it can be demanding to install. That's about the sum of my knowledge--but oooh, it felt nice!

I guess it qualifies as honed (definitely not glossy, but it has some reflectivity...is that a word?). I was completely bowled over at the granite/tile store, the tile displays proved to me that I really need to get out more! I opted to go with a less expensive tile for the backsplash, but, ooh, what fun to see what is possible.

I feel for ya too. I am a prisoner in the recliner as I type this, hubby is bustin' up tile and putting down hardwood. The kitchen is next.
