I missed something here...

When did Fine Cooking start having only 6 issues/year and not 7?  It's just about renewal time for me, and I noticed that it now says 6 issues/year.  What happened to the extra issue?

I remember a letter from the editor about the alignment of publishing dates with seasons, number of issues etc. Do subscription members receive the other supplemental publications as part of the yearly subscription? Inquiring minds need to know.

Nope.

I think that it used to be a holiday baking issue, but it hasn't been around for quite a while.  I did call up a few years ago, to see where it was, and that's when they told me they don't publish it anymore.  I guess we now get six issues for the price of seven.  What a deal!!

I had to go count my issues. For the past couple years, the subscription has been 7 issues (January and December are the two months by themselves). Hopefully the seventh for this year will arrive early next week! It does say 6 issues when you click on the "subscribe" icon. I remember emailing Taunton about the change (I loved the holiday baking issue). They were adjusting their format for subscriptions (so we weren't getting the Thanksgiving issue the first week of August), and just included more holiday stuff in the December issue.

I have found that almost all of the recipes in the special issues (by order or newsstand only) have been published in FC already. That doesn't, of course, stop me from buying them!! On rare occasions I do pass up on a special publication.

I truly hope that the subscription is not being changed to only six issues (if so, I should get a refund, as my subscription doesn't run out until 1/11!).

I thought a couple of years ago (or maybe last year?) they turned the "Holiday Baking" one into a regular issue. They even had a note in the December issue talking about it. I thought at that time they said they were going to 7 regular issues...

You are exactly right--it did say that (I just forgot and emailed them anyhow), and it was at least two years ago. But if you click at the top of this screen where it says "Subscribe to Fine Cooking," it says that one year is 6 issues. I hope that it is incorrect.

I remember when the Holiday Baking issue got scrapped, but I know for sure that last year there were 7 regular issues...and I thought that things were going to stay that way.  I don't remember seeing anything about going to 6 issues....hmm.  Hopefully someone from Taunton will let us know, because it seems like I'm not the only one who's a bit confused.

Even with six issues, I consider FC a bargain.

Me too and the timing works OK for me as I rarely get through trying everything I want from one issue when another one arrives. Not enough time in my life for cooking!

Don't repeat it too loudly, but I stopped subscribing a few years ago and now only purchase the special issues that interest me. Shhhh!

I subscribe to the web site ($3/month) and buy the special issues I want.  Works for me! :-)

It broke my heart a little to let the subscription lapse as we were charter subscribers, but in truth, the more recent regular mags just don't inspire me the way the older ones did.

It's not a secret since you've told before. Odd the things that stick in one's so-called mind. ;-)

It doesn't mean you're a bad person, you know. The reason I subscribe is that I'd buy the issues anyway, would pay more at the supermarket and could never be sure of getting an issue.

I guess I feel a little like an interloper here as a result of not subscribing. Irrational, I admit!

Most irrational and I'd probably feel the same way! ;-)

I just got #96 and in the publishing information it says "Fine Cooking is published 6 times a year."

The Editor's column includes this, "And speaking of surprises, we have a couple up our sleeve, beginning with a new look and a new Web site, both debuting at the start of the New Year."

I also got 96 today. Did anyone notice that #96 says, "January???" So apparently we only got six issues this past year. Hmmm...Wonder what the "surprises" are?

"A new Web site" is a bit scary!!  Every time Food Network does it, it is not an improvement!!

I've NEVER subscribed, always bought on the newsstand. Of course, I have to deal with Canada Post. I've only missed one issue, probably my own fault, and have only bought the first two or three special issues. Stopped doing that once I found out that all the recipes were reprints.

Cheers,

I asked about the six issues instead of seven. Here is their reply:

Thank you for your inquiry. Last year was the last year we created a special holiday bonus issue for Fine Cooking. Effective January, 2008, Fine Cooking subscriptions changed to six bimonthly issues.

In the climate that we're in, the choice was to either increase the price or combine the holiday issue with a regular issue. It was a tough decision but one ruled by the desires of our subscribers.
