CooksTalk Upgrade: Same forum, new look

RDA's picture

Good news, everyone: The CooksTalk forum will move to a new and improved platform called Drupal the week of Nov. 16. The move is part of a planned site-wide upgrade. CooksTalk is the first area of the site to benefit from this new technology.

What does this mean to you? CooksTalk will feature:

·         A new clean look

·         Improved Google search

·         Improved member profiles

·         Login-free message reading

·         Archived discussions still available (they are being migrated over right now)

·         Upgrades to raise the forum to industry standards

Stay tuned to FineCooking.com for more information in the coming weeks. I’ll pass along details as they become available.

ON one of the other forums (post #39715, reply #90 of 103)

ON one of the other forums the mod said they could make it chronological.
So RDA, can you or not? I want to know, because if you can't them I'm not going to stick with this and try to make it work. It's nonnegotiable with me. So please answer us.

You can say that again. LOL (post #39715, reply #93 of 103)

You can say that again. LOL If they could make it chronological, how would you be able to tell which message a post was responding to? Without a unique identifier (message number), it would be impossible. You certainly can't rely on the poster to identify which post is being replied to.

MeanChef it would be far (post #39715, reply #97 of 103)

MeanChef it would be far simpler if our posts were still numbered, otherwise we'd have to get in the habit of starting our replies with the person's name we're addressing, and probably pasting some or all of the original msg in our reply. But it would be better than scrolling through page after page of old messages hunting for the 6 or 7 new ones.

Apparently, they can make it (post #39715, reply #94 of 103)

Apparently, they can make it chronological but only under the post that is beig replied to. So, both MeanChef and I replied to your post,he posted first. They can make it chronological so that his shows first, then mine. Or they can make it reverse chronological, so mine would show first. But, both of ours will still be under yours.

That's my understanding of the way it is. I don't believe the whole thread can be chronological. Maybe it's something the developers can work on, but i don't think it's an easy config change. This sucks. The gardeners have already sprouted off to a new home.

Is there some place where the improvements of this forum compared to the old one are listed?

I mean, what are supposed to be the advantages of this new forum from the perspective of the users? We, the users....

There is a thread titled "How the new format is better" or some such title, but I'm afraid it mostly contains complaints. Haven't seen too much I'm happy with yet.

· Improved member profiles
· Login-free message reading
· Archived discussions still available (they are being migrated over right now)
· Upgrades to raise the forum to industry standards

Kathy/promises- so what of these did we get? Not in the least bit clean. No search at all. Not sure about member profiles, I know I still can't add a picture. LOL Login free message? Ok. Upgrades to raise forum to industry standards? Ummm I'll have to take their word on this, as I don't see any upgrades.

TAKE AWAY THE ORANGE!!!! TAKE AWAY THE ORANGE!!!!

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Adele, I think they've said (post #39715, reply #100 of 103)

Adele, I think they've said the search will be better in a few days or so. As for member profiles and login-free message, I'd gladly give those up to have sensical threads again.
Not fond of the orange but think I could even adjust to htat. But really want to be able to address my posts and have them in one long chronology. And to be able to filter the discussion list to only those threads I've not yet opened.

Peter made SWC's orange blue (post #39715, reply #101 of 103)

Peter made SWC's orange blue somehow. Hopefully, he'll tell us what he did.
