CooksTalk Upgrade: Same forum, new look

RDA's picture

Good news, everyone: The CooksTalk forum will move to a new and improved platform called Drupal the week of Nov. 16. The move is part of a planned site-wide upgrade. CooksTalk is the first area of the site to benefit from this new technology.

What does this mean to you? CooksTalk will feature:

·         A new clean look

·         Improved Google search

·         Improved member profiles

·         Login-free message reading

·         Archived discussions still available (they are being migrated over right now)

·         Upgrades to raise the forum to industry standards

Stay tuned to FineCooking.com for more information in the coming weeks. I’ll pass along details as they become available.

Well, the over the fence conversion is done as is gatherings. Take a look, it is real different. I am holding my judgement until I look at it a few times.

I just peeked at the Threads Forum.

All I can say is

UH OH!!

I just checked out Threads. What a freakin' mess. I don't think I want to go through this again.

I'll miss the topics column on the left and discussion on the right.  We now have to go back and forth from page to page.  Not good.

I agree. I thought the old format was actually well designed and easy to follow. Why, oh why, do people think new is always better?

I took a look, but not having visited those before, I'm not sure how they used to be. It doesn't look like the threads are grouped into folders--did they have folders before?

Because if they get rid of our folders on CT, that will be horrid. Imagine trying to search for something?

Also don't like having to go back and forth between the thread titles and the actual messages.

I took PeterD's admonition to heart so was keeping an open mind but now this has me a little worried.

Over the fence and gatherings were EXACTLY the same as ct. So this will be next. There is a way to search for archived posts. But know that our most recent discussion yesterday had the last 5 or more posts disappear on the over the fence forum. But everything else is there. But the dating is not the same. *sigh* AND there is no edit button. Argh!
And there are folders on the new forum, but it looks the same as the messages. But as you said open mind!

I am in mourning--or in the case of CT, pre-mourning.  They've taken all the good things and eliminated them and replaced them with...not good things.

ETA: Before I could log in at OTF and be logged in here.  Now I had to log in at both forums.  Perhaps when the changeover takes place here, that will happen.  But, believe me, I'm not going to hold my royal breath.

I couldn't find any place to search except if you knew the specific thread number.  As I said. UH OH. And how about posting photos? Better go look again. I think our halcyon days are numbered. And--lots of ads. Sigh.

Getting out my life preserver.  I may have to abandon ship. :(

Jean: Abandon ship? I signed (post #39715, reply #71 of 103)

Jean: Abandon ship? I signed on a couple of times recently and didn't recognize the site and signed off. (I was in a hurry.) Realized this morning this IS the new site. Egads! My first reaction is this is horrid! I can't find things; how does one spell-check or post picture; it's hard to follow—I miss the left/right columns! I'm hoping I get used to it pretty quickly or it's bye-bye for me too. I'd oh so miss the crew!

Plus, what's with the double signatures and quotes at the end of a message? In the old form, you could hide signatures and eliminate the distraction. I find this new format visually overwhelming and confusing. Yuck!

I think I found the list of folders to the left of the list of topics, but there seemed to be far fewer of both than what we have here. It seemed like a lot got grouped under "General." I hope that doesn't happen here, it's so good the way it is with more specific folder titles.

The FAQs say you can no longer delete posts, that could get interesting. And no text formatting with bold and ital, as an editor that will be hard for me to adjust to.

I guess our days are numbered!

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Oh, dear, there is nothing (post #39715, reply #69 of 103)

Oh, dear, there is nothing clean about this. It's very cluttered, can't easily tell old posts from new posts, can't easily tell which post a new post is replying to....I hope it gets better.

ITA with you; sorry, started another thread about this because I couldn't see all the threads at once. Sigh. And what's with all the silhouettes? I can see self-photos if people want to post those, but why the outlines if we don't?

'Clean look'? It's way, way too busy.
The orange is so very, very annoying.
There is no spell check.
Orange.
Too much space.
Orange
Too much to scroll through for a 'new' message.
Takes forever to scroll around, much less hit 'save' and I'm on my work computer, it will be hell at home on dial-up.

I'm sure it will get better though. (Fingers crossed)

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Jean, when I was exploring (post #39715, reply #77 of 103)

Jean, when I was exploring the other forums, on the left column with the thread titles it would show if there were new replies and have a link to them. But today on CT I don't see that--do you? I'm having to look at this thread and think, "did it have 76 replies before or 75, so there's one new one?"
:(

I do see that... You have to (post #39715, reply #78 of 103)

I do see that... You have to be logged in to see it, though.

Also I think as they make adjustments, things are temporarily disappearing.

Yes, we're going to have to (post #39715, reply #80 of 103)

Yes, we're going to have to expect some growing pains. It does seem to take forever to reload when you change topics though. I don't think it's just my computer. Remember when we could go balance our checking account and start dinner while we waited? -- was that with WebX? Now that was awful!

Robyn,
I am glad you have chosen to change to the most common format used in web forums. I have always hated the old format.

However .... PLEASE get rid of the orange text .... geeeeze ! It might be agood idea for you to look at some other online forums and make this one a little more readable.

This is a perfect example of (post #39715, reply #85 of 103)

This is a perfect example of Computer people doing a project without ever asking for input from the users. This has been and always will be the primary reason for most computer project failures.
As you can tell from most of the comments thus far, the complaints are fairly consistent and could probably have been easily avoided had someone thought to ask the forum users prior to launching into this project.
Instead you are likely left with constant ******ing because it is way way too late in the process to solve most of the issues.

kathymcmo's picture

MeanChef you are absolutely (post #39715, reply #86 of 103)

MeanChef you are absolutely right re: the reason this new format is such a disaster. They should've asked for input. On Breaktime apparently they have a bunch of peer moderators, created it seems originally to police uncivil posters, but from reading it the last few days it sounded like these peers were given access to a Beta site to test and comment. Why the heck weren't we given that courtesy? People would've been eager to help.
Even so, a competent, professional site designer could've audited the old CT for a week or so to see what the key functionalities were, how it was being used. Not hard to do, and I'd like Taunton to explain why they didn't do that, why they chose to take an off-the-shelf app and worry about customization later. Inexcusable IMNSHO.

MEANCHEF's picture

The whole structure of this (post #39715, reply #87 of 103)

The whole structure of this off the shelf forum format is not based on "numbered" messages like the old CT. This is the main reason why they will never be able to address the primary comcerns we have all been discussing.

kathymcmo's picture

You may be right, but over on (post #39715, reply #88 of 103)

You may be right, but over on Breaktime their mod posted this message saying that this Drupal format can be customized easily:
. Unlike MZinga, Drupal is fully configurable by someone like me and doesn't require a developer (or third-party provider) to make changes to the functionality. So I'll be looking to your comments and feedback throughout the day and tweaking the forum to meet your needs as best I can.

Cheers,
Matt Berger
Taunton.com

I'm praying they can go back to a chronological listing of the new posts and we'll just have to learn to address the person we're posting in the message and maybe post the gist of the message we're replying to also.

AnnL's picture

Yes, it's customizable, but (post #39715, reply #89 of 103)

Yes, it's customizable, but the question is HOW much customizing can be done?? There is a limit and I don't think they can do the strictly chronological, new posts only.
