Heart Healthy Cookbooks

Lee's picture

We've had an interesting couple of weeks.  Long story short, DH had angioplasty this past Monday and two stents were inserted to relieve blockage in a main arterty to his heart.  He's feeling fine and was back in the office on Wednesday.  He'll be able to start exercising in the next week or so.  Today's medical technology is truly amazing.  We already eat pretty healthfully, but this will require more attention to no-nos, especially saturated fats, so I've been researching cookbooks that emphasize low fat, heart-healthy foods.  Most of the ones I saw are pretty grim.

I looked through Ellie Krieger's The Foods You Crave yesterday and it seems to have a nice variety of low fat recipes that actually sound like REAL good food.  EatingWell's Recipes For Two also looked good.  I really like the nutritional tables at the end of each recipe in these books.  I'm sure that I'll be able to judge what I'm putting into a dish pretty well once I get a basic understanding of food values in my head.  Does anyone have either of these?  Can anyone recommend others?

the American Heart Association has "the Low-Fat, Low Cholesterol Cook Book" that has some excellent recipes, they publish 10 others for everything from Low Salt to Low Calorie, I'll dig up the site and post a link but you can get it sent to you for free if your willing to put up with a little spam email until you cancel from a pharmecutical co that wants your money.

some of the recipes are
Mesquite grilled red snapper with gingered black bean salsa
Thai Chicken with Basil & vegetables
Balsamic braised beef with exotic mushrooms
Braised eye of round roast with brown gravy

etc...

I've visited their website, but didn't notice anything about cookbooks.  I'll check again.  Thanks.

the free offer expired, but on the AAA site click on diet/nutrition and you can access recipes online, order the books (paperbacks run 15.95) and they have some quarterly magazines with recipes also
