Confession time (post #62799)

Let's take the gloves off

Marie Louise was brave enough to say how many cookbooks she gave away, how many she kept

Let's hear some numbers....

How many do YOU have?

I need to go home and count, I know I have around 80 cookbooks back home in Brazil, but don t know how many here.

Wow. Like Jean said, you win. I guess I can still buy a few more without feeling guilty. DH keeps saying I need a few more bookcases. I think he's right. I have quite a few on the floor right now.

Well, I can honestly say that I have a HELL of a lot more than when I first started at this forum.  LOL

I have 164 cookbooks, with 4 due next week:  The Best of Clay Pot Cooking, Cookwise, Good Day for a Picnic and My Kitchen in Spain.  I started out with less than 20.

If I add story books- food related- those now come to 53.  Remember when I asked for any recommendations?

Shoot!  Movies!  Forgot food movies!  18 of those, with Vatel right up there in the #2 spot next to Babette's Feast.  I need to put these on the spreadsheet.

Amy, I'm telling my Mom how many you have, she thinks I'm over the edge!

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

OK I just went through the house and counted what I could find-and a couple that I couldn't, because I know they're here somewhere.....and I got 6654 so Schnitzel is still Queen. I have started to count many times and stopped because I was afraid to know the total number...so that's my fear conquered tonight!

So does this mean I have to buy a few more to catch up?

Of course:) With all the enablers here, it won't be too hard.
We'll have to check those figures again next year to see if you outdid Schnitzel.

Oh, I suspect others have us beat by more.  I actually thought I had more than I did, so I was pleasantly surprised that my total was so low.  And I'm sure there are a few I missed, but not enough to usurp you!

My turn....

ninety two in the US

I guess I should not count the ones in Brazil, they are definitely with my former husband for eternity and the ones I really missed, I got a second copy here.

So, I guess I'm not in that bad a shape compared to other fellow CTers - but still, there are so many I never cooked anything from! But, but, but.... I like to look at them, hold them, read them

(le sigh)

I thought this would be a good but mindless excersie so I counted the books I on my desk and library table. OK, that was 112 and so I went into the kitchen and looked up at the 48 lineal feet of bookshelves over my head and got bored very quickly. Maybe I need another form of mental exercise.

Sometimes we have to count the number of bacterial colonies on a Petri dish - when there are less than 200-300, it's no big deal, but one is not always that lucky... :-)

one trick we use is to divide the plate in four sections - count one of them and multiply the number by 4

gives a good enough approximation - of course, books have different thicknesses, but what the heck, you could use a similar trick, divide your shelves in ten sections and come up with a number.

You know, schnitzel holds the first place so far, but there are folks threatening to beat her in the near future - you COULD do it!

:-)

OK, now I feel better, the last time I actually counted them it was 487, mind you that was 1998! Can I help it that my DH keeps getting me more? It is not as though I would ever suggest any new titles to him. LOL

LOL Although, I think Marcia has the cookbook crown now... even though she hasn't endured the torture of actually counting them!

They're all over the d*mn place, Amy, and I refuse to count them now. I did count before we moved, and there were over 1000 six years ago. I weeded then, too, but have more now, and I don't buy nearly as many as I used to.

We won't even discuss the non-cooking books. :)

Do we have to count all those "little books"? You know the cookbooks you pick up here and there on just one subject.... like Huckleberries? They don't take up much room. And of course I didn’t buy all of mine.  My sister and I divided our mothers when she passed away. I took most of them for sentimental reasons. My sister only took a few.

I have been trying not to buy any more without really researching them first. So I have started checking them out of the library. Right now I have, Baking From My House to Yours, Giadia’s new one and Jamie’s Italy. All which are so good, I must have them for my own library! Sometimes I think it is crazy. Even if I cooked just one recipe out of each book I could cook something new every day. And let us not forget the magazines.

Every time I think I am over the edge and out of control I pop on Cooks Talk and read about someone who has two or three coming in the mail any day now from various sources. It makes me feel better to know there are others like me out there.

So with that said I am going to check into the cook book clubs. I agree we could have much worse addictions. After all, no one bats an eye if someone buys tons of fiction. (I am guilty here too). People can have huge libraries full of fiction and people just think they are avid readers. And there are very few fiction books that I read more than once. I read them, put them on the bookshelf and there they sit. Not the case with a cookbook.

So I say we buy away and stop counting. Sharing all the “must haves” here, so none of us miss out!!

You are quite right.  My DH will go through 3-5 fiction books a week.  Fortunately, he gets most at the used book store and trades his back in.  This is no different, except that I keep mine, LOL.

Do you have a good library in Southern Pines? Your DH should go there if he reads so much. Pamilyn

Well I'm around 160 if you count a few which are hardly more than brochures, and if you don't count a complete set of FC.

I'm glad I inspired someone!

Counting the newest cookbook (Boulevard) that came this week, I have 50 cookbooks. That includes 2 cocktail books & Red Wine w/ Fish.

I gave away about 150, including food-related books. I enjoyed them like novels, feel I got my money's worth out of each and every one, but I don't keep every book I've ever read, so why keep all these cookbooks? My bookcase has room for lots of new cookbooks now. :-)

It is a beautiful book, so it will be a good read. (And I've eaten at the restaurant, so that's always fun.) Not sure I'll cook out of it.

Well, after reading everyone else's posts, I don't feel nearly so bad about our 156.  I didn't count the cake decorating technique books -- they don't count, right?!

They count double! (g)

You may notice I haven't posted the number of cookbooks we (the 'we' means nothing) have, but let's just say that my stash tops Amy's, and while I do get rid of clinkers from time to time, I've no intention of doing a major weeding. These books are precious to me.

I'm with you, Marcia.  Even the old cookbooks (Better Homes & Gardens stuff from the 50s) remind me of the early days when I first began to cook.
