Confession time (post #62799)

Let's take the gloves off

Marie Louise was brave enough to say how many cookbooks she gave away, how many she kept

Let's hear some numbers....

How many do YOU have?

I need to go home and count, I know I have around 80 cookbooks back home in Brazil, but don t know how many here.

Marie Louise inspired me :o). I've been going through my cookbooks as well, trying to find those that I'll probably never make something from. It was hard ;o). I gave two books to a co-worker, for his son who is in training to be a chef. I gave two to my sister. I took at least 5 out that I don't know what to do with. They are all in 'like new condition' but truth be told, I just don't like the recipes that are in them. Plus, the majority of my books are english or about cake decorating, and most people just aren't interested around here.

I think I have at least a 100 or so left (but never counted them). That does sound bad. I just love books though, and think they are a treasure that will last a life time. I have such a hard time parting with them!

All I know is that when we moved, I had 12 boxes of cookbooks, and I know I've bought quite a few more since we got here.  That doesn't count the magazines or the annual issues or the special issues of FC.  I think I got five or six for Christmas.  I guess you could say I'm a cookbook addict.  I've got four bookshelves full and still about 6 or 7 boxes in the basement.  I know I should go through them and cull them, but it's sort of like deciding which child to keep and which to give away...on any given day, one or the other is in or out of the will, so guess I have to keep them all.

I know the feeling! And no, I didn't include magazine either. That would make it really scary ;o). I don't think that a cookbook addiction is a bad one and I'm sticking to my story!

I always tell self-professed book addicts that come into the bookstore that there are much worse things to be addicted to than books. :)

I'll give you an exact count when I go home to lunch.  This is just cookbooks, not cooking related books? (Stories to include cooks/columnists/restaurants)

Oh, dear, i just counted 180 - not counting the annuals or the Taunton compiled specials, or the self-pubished 'fund raiser' types that the schools and churches put out. (probably around 20+ of those). And I have about 6-7 more that are coming in the mail...used--for around 5 bucks each. It's an obsession, but I love to read cookbooks. So shoot me and I just rejoined the Good Cook.

<So shoot me and I just rejoined the Good Cook.>

I'm with you, Jean. I'll be re-joining the Good Cook for the umteenth time (since the early '70s!). And, as I collected books scattered around the house in preparation for this party tonight, I realized that I've acquired about 10 new books in the past couple of months. I wouldn't begin to count my whole collection, but like many of you all, they bring me pleasure. Over the years, I have weeded out many as my tastes and interests have changed, but sometimes I've regretted that move.

Half.com is a good place to sell your like-new books. They're simple to post, and you only pay a commission if you sell a book. In most cases, they have the picture of the book. Just use the ISBN to search the book you want to sell. I've done very well with art books, etc.

If we have to count magazines as well, I'm in real trouble. ; )

i have about 30 left, gave to my local library 20-30 last year and probably twice as many in the previous year. i also scanned some fav recipes, reorganized my binders and vowed to use the local libraries - they seem to have a great selection.

OMG! You mean I have to go home and count? And then confess? ;-)

Will you be satisfied with the information that I have two bookcases full of cookbooks? You know, the floor to ceiling kind of bookcase. Oh, yes...there is also a little bookcase with only four shelves. And there is one in the basement....hmmmm.

Maybe this is an exercise I don't want to do ;-)

Why must we count and admit how many we have?  What's wrong with bragging about how many we have and hoarding them?  The more the merrier.

I have less than 30 left. Sold and gave a lot away about 10 years ago, and try to get rid of 2 for each new one I bring in.

Same deal for shoes. I had over 180 pairs of shoes. I'm at about 40 now, though the 8 pairs I bought over Christmas (after the six pairs in New York) haven't been traded out for yet.

Cook books are my addiction.  DH says that I would be content to wear the same jeans and sweater every day (assuming he can wash and dry them before I get up, LOL)  I have two pair of shoes I wear all the time.  One is a pair of Eccos which I stepped into white paint in.  The other is a pair of Eccos which are a wee bit hard to get on.  Oh yeah, I do have one dress up pair I wear.  The rest of my shoes and clothes just sit in the closet.

Actually, I think it's the 21st, but I actually went out and bought two pair of shoes, about a gazillion pair of socks/leggings, and will be bringing some slacks, so jeans won't be the only option...but drinking wine is definitely on the list of things to do, LOL.

I'm a baby compared to you guys.  I counted 150 sitting on shelves and there's got to be 25 laying around the house and beside beds, so I'll guess 175 ish.  Probably on par with shoes :)

I'm sorry, I didn't quite hear you. Did you just whisper 678? Not that I'd want to call attention to you or anything. I just wanted to be sure that the number was actually 678 cookbooks that you, Schnitzel, own.
