What are we actually eating?

hillfarmer's picture

Hello!

This is a query from Tasmania, that little island south of Australia: where the Devil comes from. We live in a very small village south of Hobart the State capital. We cook on a wood-fired stove [many things taste better!] and have an electric cooker for back-up. Our query is: does anyone know of cooking software which gives comprehensive nutritional analyses, especially in relation to fats and sugars. Mastercook does it, but only up to a point.

Thanks in advance!

Hello hillfarmer! I hail from Sunny Sydney.

Re cooking software I use Living Cookbook. It does have nutritional info and has useful nutritional info for most basic ingredients. You can add your own ingredients to the database and if you had nutritional info for those items you can add those too. You can download a free trial version at www.livingcookbook.com

You can also add your own ingredients' nutritional info in Mastercook. I am still finding Living Cook not very user friendly to me.

I guess it's just different strokes. Hillfarmer did say that Mastercook wasn't quite doing the job he/she wanted.

Aloha from Hawaii, where the devil still governs.

www.recipezaar.com  is a popular recipe-sharing website.  You can go there free (with annoying adverting) or buy a plus membership (I think $20 US)

Their advanced nutrition analysis may have everything you need.
Below is a captured screenshot of a random recipe from there.

Best of luck.

BTW:  Campfire cooking over real wood is my overwhelming favorite.

Hmm… I wonder if they meant to write:
¼ tsp of cayenne pepper instead of ¼ lb ?
Oh well – too late to worry about it now !

Aloha to you too!

Or: gooday, as we say here.

That analysis is astonishingly detailed, and hold out great hope for us. We'll go to the site tonight and will let you know how we get on.

Loved the caricature: I've had moments like that myself.

Thank you very much!
