Keeping copies of Magazines?

I have all the Cook's Illustrated magazines, plus the bound volumes, and most of the Fine Cooking magazines, and miscellaneous issues of other magazines -- Gourmet, Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Food & Wine, and on and on.
I am starting a New Year's purge, and since finding this forum, it's occurred to me that maybe I should donate the magazines to the library (they sell magazines for $.25 to raise money), that if I need to find something, I could probably find it online. The same could be true of many of the cookbooks I have accumulated over the years. (And I got four of the ones I wanted yesterday. It's so interesting to see the evolution in cookbook writing.)
Does anyone else have this problem? Is this idea a good one, or will I experience regret once they are gone,even if I have a neater house?

I hoard cookbooks, and magazines, too.  I'm finally at the point where I am going to get rid of all the old Gourmet and Bon Appetit.  I'll keep my FC and Saveur as long as they don't take over the house.  I might get rid of the CI, since I have the bound volumes.

Do you keep both the loose issues and the bound volumes of FC? I do and I question my sanity. I'm sure Taunton loves me.

The people who gave us golf and called it a game are the same people who gave us bag pipes and called it music and haggis and called it food.

Afraid so.  I was determined to complete my collection of loose FCs and finally did so, and have the bound versions as well.  Have to admit that I always go to the loose copies when I'm looking for a recipe, which doesn't make much sense...habit, I suppose.  Taunton probably loves us both!

Me three. DH will order the 2005 bound versions for his next US trip, then I'll have 4 huge books on my already too small kitchen book shelves.


I really need to print out our IndexGuy's index and actually keep it in the kitchen. The magazines are still spread out a bit, some in the kitchen, some on the sofa table, most downstairs in the guest bedroom, so looking for a specific recipe can take some time.

I unloaded my collection of Gourmet several years ago and have never once missed them. There were a few good recipes in them, but as you said, nothing I couldn't get online. The rest seemed to be ads for luxury goods, and "lifestyle" articles that had absolutely no relevance to my lifestyle. (Reviews of NYC restaurants with $50 entrees are really of no interest to a Midwestern graduate student!)


I could never get rid of my Fine Cooking magazines, though (and I have all of them). They contain not only recipes, but valuable articles on technique and on adapting/improvising the recipes. I refer to them constantly - I think I cook more out of them than out of the cookbooks I have.


If you do decide to purge your Fine Cooking collection, they are in pretty high demand, as has already been mentioned. You could probably get a good price for them either here or on eBay.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't thought about selling them.
I have donated old Gourmets, and haven't missed them, either. Do you use Cook's Illustrated? I suppose that having the bound volumes would replace the magazines.
Does anyone save recipes on their hard drives? That seems like it would be a good place to store them, but maybe difficult to organize or search.

Martha, I keep ALL my recipes on my computer, print them out and keep in two 3-ring binders. No. 1 has 11 categories (recipes for each category are stored in separate files): Appetizers; Beverages; Soups & Sauces; Fish; Pasta; Meat; Poultry; Indian Food; Vegetables/Vegetarian Meals; Rice; Salads, Dressings, & Gelatin Molds. #2: Desserts; Dolci; Cakes; Pies & Tarts; Cookies; Breads; Pizza; Preserves & Pickles; Tips & Conversion Tables. I also have an Index page for each file so each recipe name is shown by page number. I looked at various recipe software, but in the end found it suited my needs better to create my own. I decorate most of the pages with little sayings or pics cut from FC and each page is in a sheet protector.

I did this out of desperation really when we moved to Florida and I no longer had the storage space I once had and was forced to part with my huge collection of magazines and cookbooks. I have whittled my cookbook collection down to six.

A television takes up space.  If you just get one of those plahhhhhhssssmahhh screens, you have floorspace for storage of cookbooks & mags.

I was impressed when I first saw them in HKG.  The idea of hanging a TV on the wall like a painting was very impressive.  Then I wondered why I couldn't just use the plaahsssmah screen as a computer monitor.  Think of the desk space!

This is very helpful; thanks so much! I was talking tonight to the son-in-law of a friend who teached computer stuff at a college in Indiana. He said I might consider keeping my recipes on Access. I'll look into that. I hate the idea of printing everything out, but it may come to that.
Six cookbooks??!! Wow, that sure isn't many. I must have hundred. When my boys were little, I couldn't read anything that required sustained attention outside of work, so cookbooks and shelter magazines were perfect. The shelter magazines are gone, but I still have most of the cookbooks. I don't cook from them, but they are fascinating. I took probably 200 magazines to the library today. No FC or Cook's Illustrated, though.

I love the idea of making up a recipe database using Access - I'm teaching myself that program for work, and I'm getting tired of making up fake databases.

If you have any recipe software loke Mastercook, go thru the mags and see if there are any Must Keep recipes and enter them into the software when done you could try selling them here or on eBay or Donate to the library and use that as a tax write off (donation)

1 - measure the board twice, 2 - cut it once, 3 - measure the space where it is supposed to go        4 - get a new board and go back to step 1

I have the same problem with Fine Woodworking and Fine Homebuilding. Shouldn't Taunton offer them on CD?....... Free to subscribers?.....

I think CDs would be a great idea, although maybe on those new high-capacity DVDs instead. It's such a pain to have to mess with multiple CDs.
My husband has a huge collection of train magazines that he will not part with. I would LOVE to have those in some sort of e-format, even on line for a subscription.
I live in Houston and lived through the Hurricane Rita scare, and have relatives in Mississippi and Alabama who lost everything in Katrina. I am really evaluating how much I need, and what is just cluttering up my life.

I have tried building a cookbook in Access and it went horribly. What I have been doing is buying cookbooks, recording my favorites and ones I would like to try and then donating the book to our local libraries. It's very guilt free. Giving up cookbooks is like giving up old friends. Any recommendations on a software I could add into.

You're a much better person than I am.  I even keep old cookbooks that I haven't opened in years and probably will never open again.  When I pass on, my daughters will have fun getting rid of them.

You know I wouldn't say this about every cooking magazine but I really wish that FC would think about doing what the New Yorker did and put all its old issues on DVD.  The New Yorker took a while and made sure they had a good search engine and added a note-taking feature and they just scanned in every page of the issue so you get it all -- pictures and ads and everything. And you can print off any page you want. And they plan to issue updates yearly I believe.  I mean I would still buy the magazine but I would by the DVD at the end of the year as well.

Understanding husbands want to eat is like breaking a code. Mine uses phrases like, it would be nice to do something different with cauliflower. So I tried two from the Silver Spoon. I thought they were great. We had friends over and he says, "I really hated those new cauliflower recipes Mary made, I really just like mine with cheese sauce. Then we have the times when I make a recipe that he had specifically called a "repeater" and decides it goes into the "not repeat" group, usually remarking that I must have done something different. The only reason I keep him around is I am too old and tired to break in a new one and he will try anything.
