Fascinating alternative

First a disclaimer:  This program is not recipe software - it just happens to do a very good of maintaining recipes that you grab 'on the fly'.

EverNote

Review for non-geeks.

Most software begins life as a collection of ideas that eventually get thrown in a box, tied up with a ribbon & sold as an application. Thus it is refreshing to see someone take a different approach and start with a concept, make that concept 'their box' and only allow ideas that support and enhance the concept to be tossed in.

To understand this concept, close your eyes.
Imagine a roll of paper below you (like a wide adding machine tape). You grab the leading edge, pull it up & write yourself a note at the top.  (Maybe a name & phone #)  Draw a line, & right below that jot down a new note – maybe that neat idea that just popped into your head.
Ok - open your eyes.

Now, what if:
• That roll never ran out of paper.
• The ink never faded.
• It never got lost.
• You could conveniently scroll thru to remind yourself what was there.
• You could instantly go to any point in the past on the tape to see what you had written.
• If you could remember any word you had written, the roll would magically show you only that note (and all the other notes that had that same word.)
• You could group notes according to any criteria that you found useful, have the roll only show that group & ‘hide’ the rest.
• Bring any note with you without having to tear it out of the roll.
• Get rid of notes that were no longer important & have the roll magically shrink to no longer show them.

If this is a concept that appeals to you, you really need to take a look at EverNote.
This unobtrusive computer program has automated the above ideas as a virtual endless roll of paper.  In addition to scribbled notes, (which it can do), you can type them on the computer’s keyboard, or use the mouse to drag notes onto the tape from any other content on your computer screen.
It is not limited to boring black text – it handles HTML content just fine & even maintains the links to where you originally got your information.
This product is in BETA release and the producers are offering a free download (in order to get you ‘hooked’ & want to buy the final product when they release it next year.)

Hmm… I wonder if they meant to write:
¼ tsp of cayenne pepper instead of ¼ lb ?
Oh well – too late to worry about it now !

this sounds cool.

I wonder if they will do a MAC version when it is released next year? I am leaning toward a new puter early next year, and leaning toward a G5 or some such.

According to the Q&A on their website, they are planning it - but not until after they do a version for the Pocket PC hand-held version.  IOW - don't hold your breath!  :-(
