Ziploc vacuum pump/bags

leonap's picture

Does anyone know if these are being discontinued? Kroger had the bags reduced for clearance for $1.79. I went to another Kroger just to load up on the bags. They had the pump reduced to $1.64 so I got two of those for DS & my Dad. Got to the register and of course, the reduced price didn't come up. Waited on price check and either the clerk or I can't read. Had ice cream so didn't go back and prove to her they were what I said. Grrr! Anyhoo, couldn't find anything online about them being discontinued. I have both this one and the Reynolds Vacuum. I like Ziploc better because it doesn't use batteries. I think I did see something about the Reynolds being discontinued.

Reynolds being discontinued? Oh no, I'd better stock up. I really like my Reynolds pump and I have a foodsaver, but this takes up a lot less space.

Well, you might want to check at Kroger if you have one. It was also reduced for clearance. I believe the pump was $4.99. Didn't notice what the bags were. Should you get some, you might want to take the tag off the shelf and carry it with you to the register!

No Kroger, no. Could just be that one chain is discontinuing. I just bought some a few days ago and they weren't on clearance, but Target had them on clearance about 7 months ago.

I love my Reynolds one for things that get opened and reclosed. I couldn't find them at my local Walmart, and worried that they'd been discontinued.

I love my foodsaver for the freezer for meats, etc., but the Reynolds one is great for cheeses, etc.

Oh, no! It's true!
I checked the Reynolds site and they've discontinued the handy vac.

Where did you get that, what bags does it use, and who makes it?  I have a food saver, which I need to take apart and see if I can make it work.  Also have the Reynolds thingy which I've never used.  Sort of hate to use it now for fear that I will love it!

I think Rod got them at the local hardware store ? ACE? I hope they don't go the way of Reynolds.  They're easier to reuse.

Yep, I checked there, but both sizes of bags are backordered. Not a good sign.

It's not clear to me if they just have the old inventory or are they producing it themselves??

I think, because it's being sold under the Reynolds name and the packaging is the same (at least in the pictures), they're selling old inventory, not manufacturing it.

That was my suspicion, too bad, the Reynolds site leads you to believe they're going to be around.

Yes, I was excited when I saw that on the site, then I went to the vendor site.  Oh well.

I have the reynolds system, too and just went ahead & placed an order for the backordered bags, minimum order of 3 of each, ugh. I really don't want to go back to the food saver. I don't have room in this dinky kitchen for it. nice to see they're making a vertical one now, but too late for moi. :)

I lay the bag flat onto the counter, all the food away from the plastic valve. Put a little water around the business end of the Vacu-vin to improve the seal, hold it down over the valve, and pump the handle as usual.

I also use vacuum bags for marinating meat in a hurry. The vacuum will make the marinade penetrate much faster.

It's a tip, send it in.  I like to see gadgets put to multiple uses.

>>I use a Vacu-vin with the Ziploc bags.<<

You are brilliant!!! I had given up on the Reynolds vacuum because it was so darn finicky--it took several repositionings every time to make it work. I just tried our wine sealer and it only took a few pulls. Perfect!!! Now I wish I had stocked up on bags. Is anyone still making them?

Thank you!!

PS If anyone wants my Reynolds sealer they can have it.

My local grocery store still has them, I bought 4 boxes last weekend. Just the quart size though.

Great--I'll try to pick up some this weekend. I checked online but the shipping was a killer.

I couldn't find them anywhere but on the one site that was posted. I did order from them because I got good results from the Reynolds sealer.

6 boxes, three of each size, cost me $35.00 including shipping. A lot to pay, really, but I use the heck out of them and don't really want to start with a new system until I'm forced to do so.

Food Saver is getting into this game. These bags probably work with the other pumps, but I'll bet they are more expensive.

Don't you hate it when they make a perfectly good product and then D/C it? I hope you are wrong @ the Reynolds, I love mine!
