My mother passed away last Sunday (5.27.2007).  She would have been 77 yesterday (5.30.2007).

As frail as she was (she used a walker and had limited mobility), all the "important organs" seemed to be quite fit so it was a surprise to my brother and me when she had a heart attack.

My mom was the first cook I ever watched on a regular basis.  While I may have had formal culinary education, I had that base of respect for food instilled by my mother on which to build.   As little as we had, my mother would throw another dish on the table if any of our friends were around at dinner time.   If anyone knew how to "stretch the soup," it was she.

I'm headed to Jersey at 8:00 a.m. today for funeral services.   Every childhood friend I ever had will be there.  It's going to be a sobfest. The entire neighborhood called her "mom."

My heart goes out to you at this time of loss for you and your family. I will keep you in my prayers. I lost my dear Mother the day before Mothers day 2001. I still miss her, and guess I always will. As much as I wanted to keep her with us, she was so sick, and it was time for her to "go home to God" All week she had been talking to her mom and dad (who passed away before I was born in 1957) All of us "kids" got to take the time to say goodbye to her, and then she took her last breath. I am so glad I was there when she went, I know it helped and meant the world to me. I am not so sure how much it helped her, but it did help me. I just feel lucky to have been able to go home and spend the last week with her. Most people do not get that chance. So...again I will keep you and your family in my prayers.
