Mother's Master Bathroom - a PROJECT

plantlust's picture

These photos show the after demolition was cleaned up photos. 1970s house, tile was yellowish, fiberglass showerbase, original builder's vanity, toilet & lighting.
It is a small masterbath. One sink, a 36x36 center drain shower and one toilet. When you enter the doorway, a window is on the left wall, the vanity/sink is directly in front of you and the shower is to the right of the vanity. From the doorway, the toilet is on your right. To give you an idea of distance, I measured the left wall (with the window) and from the door to the wall behind the vanity is 69 inches.

As I said, demolition is finished and we also took down the stupid soffit over the shower(about a foot of deadspace). Just that little change makes the room look larger. The plumber's meeting tonight confirmed that we really can't make any changes. To quote the plumber, "Well, you COULD make these changes but they'd be VERY expensive, take too long & then what would you gain? Nothing. You'd be better off selling this house and buying another one." The meeting also confirmed that there is NO WAY it will be done by tomorrow. Especially not if you want a simple yet elegant bathroom.

Plumbing fixtures: vanity cabinet, sink, tub/shower faucet w/diverter on the escutcheon plate & handheld personal shower have been ordered and are all instock. I "think" I will be able to pick them up from the warehouse on Friday. Depends on when I get the email ok.

Well the 2nd and 3rd demolition photos didn't attach. Let me try that here. Then comes the design idea photo.

GREAT...anyone have an idea of how to attach photos to a comment?

Well this was STRANGE. I can't attach a photo to a reply. I have to go back to edit my original post and ADD more photos. Sheesh. Hopefully, you will see 3 demolition photos and 1 idea photo.

If I am following your post (post #69136, reply #3 of 8)

If I am following your post correctly there should be 4 photos. I see all of them.

Plumber sounds like a chipper person. Sensitive, as well. Must be sad to look at the world only seeing dollar signs.

He's a really great guy. (post #69136, reply #4 of 8)

He's a really great guy. LOVES working on older houses (most plumbers around here prefer new construction), did a FANTASTIC job on my house (1920-30s Sears house) and will suggest better ways to do things. He likes Mother alot (and she trusts his work) and is upset about her tumour, so he will rearrange things to work on her bathroom.

Our jacuzzi tub has a (post #69136, reply #5 of 8)

Our jacuzzi tub has a personal shower that I use all the time for hair washing. I just lean over the tub. Our separate corner shower has the same type of shower head on an adjustable bar so you can set it for any height or hand hold it. Nice for really tall people or for the kids. The only thing we didn't think of was to put a bench in it. We bought a stool for me to use, but even that is not too easy to stand up from. Maybe we can put in some grab rails-- I'll have to ask DSiL who does most of the remodel/construction around here.
Your Mom is blessed to have you. Good luck with your project--your plumber sounds like a gem!

Ziggy the Tile Guy just (post #69136, reply #6 of 8)

Ziggy the Tile Guy just started work today and it is looking BEAUTIFUL.  With luck we will be done by Wed.  Mother has promised not to die until after she's taken the first shower in her newly redone Master Bath.

Mother took a shower! (post #69136, reply #7 of 8)

On Monday afternoon, the 2 hospice nurses arrived.  With my brother & a neighbor from across the street's help, we got Mother into her wheelchair and both of the guys (one in front, one in back) took her up the stairs.  She was then wheeled thru her bedroom and thru the bathroom door.

She was THRILLED.  She also spotted the video camera that my brother had set up on the new vanity to capture her expression.  I also took still photos.  Mother seemed especially entranced w/the new light fixture (I picked that out).  The nurses were totally impressed with the layout.  They especially liked the teak shower seat (stainless steel hardware that allows you to fold it down when not needed) and the hand held shower.

Unfortunately, the photos are larger than 6MB, so I don't think I can post them here.  Unless someone has a work around?
