Men Who Stare at Goats

Carole4's picture

Saw it this afternoon and it is a great quirky, thought-provoking movie. Of course, George Clooney helps as does Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. Those old hippies had something going on....:)

Seriously, it is a movie that makes one think.

Is it anything like The Three Kings?  In the reviews, it says "quirky" as you say and funny, and then "dark"--which I thought Three Kings was also.

Nothing like The Three Kings. It's like Timothy Leary meets the military.

I heard it got two "skip it" reviews from the movie reviewers, which for some strange reason makes me want to see it.

Husband and I were just talking about it. We liked it and not everyone would get all the drug references. Quirky in the sense that you know what is going to happen, but then you are surprised. Go see it.

Does it have the same vibe as "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?"   That quirky, intelligent, dark-yet-smartly funny vibe?

I loved Oh Brother, went right out and bought the CD of the sound track.  The DVD didn't come out until much later.

Only if you like the rock band Boston...Clooney and Spacey are great in this one. You love one of the characters but hate the other one, at least we did. Jeff Bridges is like the rug that brings the room together. <G> You can't quite figure out Clooney's and Bridge's characters until the end.

For some reason I cannot fathom Kevin Spacey is a huge turn-off for me, I've never liked a film he's been in so I figure this one isn't going to feature on my must-see list!

He has a very small part, Clooney and Ewan McGregor are the main characters. What is it you don't like about Spacey? Did you see 21 or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil or Usual Suspects? He's good, IMO, at portraying very different men.

Oh, wow, I LOVE Boston!!! (LOL)  Yea-yea- it dates me, I know.

I also adore Kevin Spacey.  The Usual Suspects is one of my favorite films.  He is brilliant.

Dates me, too. I think Spacey is one of those actors you either love or hate.

I loved Spacey in LA Confidential

Oh, I had forgotten that one. Usual Suspects takes such twists and turns that one really didn't know until the very end who Spacey's character was.

we watched Usual Suspects again last year and forgot enough of it that we were still surprised at the end :)

LA Confidential should have been the Academy Award winner - it was up against Titanic.

Did you see Shrink? Spacey was good in it. I watched it on DVD and didn't have high hopes for it, and it was slow in the beginning but in the end I liked it. It had a young actress who was really good. Spacey was aptly named for his part since he played a psychiatrist who was drowning his grief in hi-potency potsmoking.

No, but I will. I think his last name suits him perfectly!

Saw Midnight (ruined a great book), Usual Suspects and American Beauty, to me he always looks uncorfortable and sounds stilted, can't work out what it is in detail though. He seems like a good guy, done some great work with live theatre over here, just can't watch him!

That's exactly how I feel about Jim Carrey. Just can't watch him.

I cant watch him, whether in interviews or in films. I know that he is talented, but something about him makes me so uncomfortable.

Me, too.  I know I'm in the minority here, but if Jim Carrey is in a movie that is a guarantee I won't watch it.

He is way too twitchy for me! I know he's a talent that many like. When he and his wife(they have an autistic child) came out with their whacky views of autism, he really lost me.

Your minority just grew by one -- no Jim Carrey movies for me, either.  No Adam Sadler, either -- except for Spanglish -- I broke my pledge and saw that one and was glad I did.  I'm such a sissy about harm and threat to children and animals, I'm afraid I'll have to pass on Staring at Goats, too.

I liked Jim Carrey way back when, but he's too "facial" for me.  I have this thing for people who mug for the camera in order to be funny.  Also dislike Adam Sandler, but loved Fifty First Dates.  Drew Barrymore just seems like someone I'd like to know.

You should see “Reign Over Me”.  I never thought much of Sandler until that one, he proved he could act.

Haven't heard of that one, but then, I am far from a movie buff.  I usually take recommendations from my DDs, but will add that one to the list.
