"Intelligent" design?

Heather's picture

There is an article in the NYTimes discussing the adoption of the March of the Penguins movie by Christian conservations as an exemplar of monogamy and other family values. Here's a quote from Andrew Coffin of the Christian publication World Magazine, . . ."That any one of these eggs survives is a remarkable feat - and, some might suppose, a strong case for intelligent design. . "
Has he seen the movie!!??? This is the least intelligent design of any creature's lifestyle on earth!

I totally agree with you.  We walked out of the movie saying exactly those words.  : )  Great movie though.

...the March of the Penguins movie by Christian conservations as an exemplar of monogamy...

WTF?!  The penguins are monogamous for one, and only one, mating season.  The next year, everyone switches partners.

What doofuses.  (The Christian conservatives making this claim, NOT the penguins!)

They ought to hold up geese, who ARE monogamous for life.

I suppose they're steadfastly ignoring the homosexual penguins...

Now you'll send them into a tizzy. Perhaps those gay penguins can be reformed with the right teaching and a good attitude LOL. <catch sarcasm here>

Heh. :-)

You laugh, but in Germany they attempted to force their homosexual penguins into hetero behavior by importing more females... and it didn't work, LOL.

Only sort of! In their defense, they are more concerned about the continuation of the species given the lack of breeding pairs.

Ah, ok. And I did see that they flew in Swedish penguins. If that isn't enough to set someone straight... ;)

There's another interesting penguin article in last Friday's WSJ and I guess Magellan penguins are monogamous, sort of. They have banded 55,000 of them and studies show that, "penguins divorce like people, and at a higher rate after reproductive failure. Also, like people, the longer a female has been with the same mate (17 years is the record), the less enthusiastically she responds to his call at the start of the breeding season. . . What's important to her is to get a good nest. . . the female will check out the nest and only then look at the male."

This is a totally different type of penguin than the Emperors in the movie--I'm not disagreeing with you about their lack of monogamy, I just thought these observations were interesting.

Admittedly, I am not a penguin expert.  All I know (that I can remember with my enfeebled brain) is what I learned from Morgan Freeman during March of the Penguins!  But when the narration of the movie clearly states (whether or not it's completely accurate) that the Emperor penguins find new mates every year, it takes a special kind of tunnel-vision on the part of the people who are trying to co-opt a popular movie for their own agenda to claim otherwise.

I don't think these people let reality get in the way of a good propaganda campaign. If this is the best plan that the "intelligent designer": can come up with--god save us all.
