I'm craving a Big Train mocha coffee

leonap's picture

Actually, it's a slushy type drink. Not an ice cream base. Hit the spot, ya know, but not heavy at all. All these fast food places are advertising similar concoctions, but all seem to be ice cream based. Anybody know of a fast food place that has what I'm talking about? I want to be able to pick one up in a drive-thru while I'm out and about.

Please explain "big train"- is it a chain where you've had this before? Is the drink something milky, like soy or skim milk with the coffee in a slush form? sounds really good...

Big Train is a brand name. I've only known two places to have it. The one I liked was slushy. The other store used ice chunks which wasn't as good. It does have milk. I think they used skim milk but you could get it topped with whipped cream. I used to treat myself to one of these every once in a while but darn it, the little coffee shop at the mall closed. I'm usually out running around when I want one.

To give you a better idea, this comes close but requires planning ahead. I think I'll make extra coffee in the morning so I can have this tomorrow night.

2 cups strong brewed coffee, decaf is fine
1/4 cup sugar, or to taste
2 cups milk, whole, skim or half-and-half, divided
chocolate syrup to taste

Combine sugar and hot coffee in a large freezer-safe mixing bowl. Stir until sugar dissolves. Stir in 1 cup milk. Cover and freeze 8 hours.

Let thaw slightly. Add remaining 1 cup milk. Beat at medium speed with an electric mixer (or perhaps blender?) until smooth. Stir in chocolate syrup to taste. Top with whipped cream if desired.

Have you tried any of their mixes?

No, but I had checked on Amazon before. Hard to justify spending that upfront. Plus if I had it here, I'd go through it much too quickly. The recipe I posted just needs a little fine tuning and maybe freezing in an ice cube tray rather than a bowl. Thanks, though!

Is it like a Starbucks Frappachino?

I'm not sure if I've ever had one of those. Seems like maybe I did. I don't like Starbucks coffee so may not have cared for it? (It's h*ll gettin' old and fergettin' everything!)

You'd like the frappucino, probably. Doesn't taste like their coffee at all. I like the mocha one, I do not care for the caramel one.

I think Baskin Robbins makes something similar... a blended coffee drink that's not ice-cream based.

I'll try the frappucino soon, if I don't choke on the price first! Thanks!

I saw an ad for Wendy's new coffee Frosty-type drinks. Is this close to what you're looking for?

Wendy's. But the Frosty drinks are ice cream based.

Nah, but the Wendy's and McD's commercials are responsible for this craving, reminding me of it. Thanks though.
