Cold and Ice (post #44932)

These pictures don't begin to show the prism effect of the ice on the trees--diamonds on every twig, but you'll get the general idea. It's gorgeous with the sun out. No sign of it melting, sorry to say. Got down to 0°F and below last night.

Very pretty!  I always love when trees have that "diamond effect".  It doesn't usually make for good driving conditions though!

Bundle up, make some comfort food and enjoy the view outside the windows!

At about 8 this morning, it was 17 below zero here. I don't know how low it got overnight; will have to check the news to find out.

I'm no woos, but have traded in most of my tundra clothing and was totally unprepared for the -17 (-40 windchill).  I can still do the walk, I'm here to tell you!

As pretty as that looks, I have to say that I have officially had enough of winter already and am hoping that it'll be spring soon. The pics are gorgeous nonetheless!

I completely agree--time for winter to leave and my crocuses, tulips and daffodils to come up. My first bulbs--I can't WAIT!

However, I think the pictures are beautiful. I do love weather like that...just before and during the holidays. By the time they're over, I'm over winter.

Beautiful!  After our record setting high of 85 degrees two days ago, it's now 29 degrees outside.  For Texas, that's winter.  I'm staying inside by the warm computer.

15 bean soup with ham is on the menu for tomorrow, with home made rye bread. And the way DH & I both feel, we'll not be making it out of the house again. Haven't been to church all month. I wonder if anyone misses us. LOL.

Usually it melts within hours but this stuff is going on its third day.  No way to photograph what your eye sees though. It's incredibly beautiful with the sun shining through it.

You all may think it is very pretty--and I do too--BUT the damage we get when we get "pretty" is phenomenal.  The boxwoods do not do well in particular.  We've dodged our usual ice storms this winter so far, but one of my prettiest pictures of an ice storm was of cherry blossoms encased in ice.

Jean:  how pretty!  I'm hoping some of that cold air makes it down to the mid atlantic region this weekend, we need some more snow!  Last weekends 8 inches were modified somewhat by the 5 days of 60 degree weather that followed ;)

Hey! We must be neighbours! It looks like that outside my windows too....and its probably about the same temperature. Supposed to be warmer tomorrow, though. Looking forward to it.

So winter still does exist! Beautiful pictures, do you supppose the close-ups might be inspirations for some stained glass?
Re:weather, I called my sister outside of Burlington, VT and there is no answer, so either they are not budging out of their cozy nests, or they have fled to a shelter somewhere if they have lost electricity. There were winds in the mountains at over 140 mph clocked there today, pretty darned cold.
Here in NM it is breezy and cool, feels like early spring. But March always brings cooler temps again and I can expect frosts late as early May! We had rain two nights ago and my rain barrels are almost full again.

Great idea.
Rod simply has to do a stained glass of the iced trees. It would be breathtaking.

I think so too. He has to be very skilled at making stained glass as some of the windows he has done have shown. I don't know if he can capture the effect of a branch within the colorless ice, but maybe there is a way.

Chuckle, I called her at home, got no answer so I left a message. She called back, only to tell me that the weather I had thought they were having was the week before- I didn't look closely enough at the date of the Vemont weather report online! She is busy doing stenciled (sp?) t-shirts for a craft fair, and forcing some plum blossoms, I think it is, to decorate her booth with.

Yes, we'll have lots of branches to pick up when we can get out there.  Nature pruned a lot this year. Silver maples don't hold up too well to ice, and  ours are really ancient.  We had 2 huge ones cut down last year and we're glad we did. The guys cleaned up aften themselves very nicely. Would love to have them come by with their chipper again.

talk about natural pruning - it was so windy here ( I know, I know) the other day that the grasses thinned themselves. I mean stuff I had been unable to rake out, is now on the rest of the bed as mulch. I've never seen it so windy.  Of course, I am grateful - I have that much less to cut next month once the mantis's come out.
