Chicken recipe

ashleyd's picture

Here is a chicken recipe that also includes the use of popcorn as a stuffing. Amazing that it hasn't been thought of before.
When I found this recipe I thought it was perfect for people, like me, who are just never sure how to tell when poultry is thoroughly cooked, but not dried out.

BAKED STUFFED CHICKEN
3 1/2 lb whole chicken
1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing
1 cup uncooked popcorn
salt and pepper to taste.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Brush chicken will with melted butter, salt and pepper. Fill cavity with stuffing and uncooked popcorn mixed together.
Place in baking pan with the neck end of the chicken towards the back of the oven. Listen for the popping sounds.
When the chicken's a$$ blows the oven door open and the chicken flies across the room, it is done.

And you thought I couldn't cook using volume measurements!

Sorry, that was around for turkey when I was really young, now I'm pretty old. But, do have to admit I would like to see one of our bright cook/scientist opinion on this ??

Doesn't popcorn pop when the moisture in the kernel expands--hence old popcorn which has dried out doesn't pop?? not sure about that.

So how would the moisture inside the bird affect this??

And from our friends at snopes.com comes this interesting report of that story and several others--enjoy!

Definitely yes on the first part. I don't know about the old popcorn thing, as it's never been a problem for me. But it sounds reasonable.

Drying out is the reason old popcorn doesn't pop or doesn't pop as well.

I think the popcorn stuffed chicken/turkey is just an old joke.

>>Well it was posted as a joke!<<

And thanks for doing so. . .I remember my Mom reading that over 40 years ago when my cousin sent her a copy. She had the best laugh and really appreciated a joke--thanks for reminding me!

There's always a slight problem with posting as joke, some people will have heard it before, some won't get it and probably some will find it offensive. But I'd not seen it before and it made me laugh so I thought it was worth a shot!

Humor is a good thing, and worth a try. Sometimes the results are surprising, especially here! LOL
