Tasty Sugar Cookie Frosting, and Cookie Recipe?

lmg82's picture

Hello, all! I am making cookies for a baby shower and need some advice. I have moon and star cookie cutters, so I'd like to make sugar cookies, or some other kind of cutout-able cookie. So, the first recipe I'm looking for is for the cookie...I will need to make the cookies two days ahead, so something that will keep well would be really helpful. I know there are plenty of sugar cookie recipes out there, but would love a tried and true recommendation!

Then I need a cookie frosting recipe. I will have time to frost the cookies the day of, if that makes any difference. Most of the sugar cookie frosting I've had are a bit on the bland side, so I'd love something that has a nice flavor. I'll either tint the frosting or top it with colored sugar.

I really appreciate your help! The cookie cutter shapes are so adorable, and I'd really like to bring great cookies to this shower.

Best,
LG

Hi LG! For the cookies, I very much recommend Abby Dodge's Cardamom Honey Cutouts:

I use cinnamon instead of the cardamom. These are very tasty cookies, and the dough is very easy to work with.

I can't speak to the frosting-- I usually use the associated Royal Icing recipe, but find that it gets rather hard. Maybe someone else has a clue!

Golden Glow Rum Butter (post #68996, reply #2 of 4)

Golden Glow Rum Butter Frosting
1/2 cup of butter
3 cups powdered sugar
enough rum to make spreadable (about 1/3 cup)
Procedure
Place the butter in small pan over low heat.
Wait until butter bubbles and begins to brown.
Stir while browning to keep from scorching.
Once golden remove from heat
Add powdered sugar and mix.
Add rum.

Growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional!

Sounds good -- does it harden (post #68996, reply #4 of 4)

Sounds good -- does it harden enough to stack the cookies?

I use Martha Stewart's recipe (post #68996, reply #3 of 4)

I use Martha Stewart's recipe for giant shaped sugar cookies: http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/flower-sugar-cookies
but use salted butter instead of unsalted.

and this frosting:
2 cups confectioner's sugar, 3 Tbs butter, at room temp., 1/8 cup milk, 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract. Beat sugar and butter, add milk and vanilla, add more butter if needed. Add food coloring as desired.

I love these cookies and normally I don't like sugar cookies much. They always get rave reviews. They are even better the day after you frost them--they get chewy.

Good luck!
