Looking for a recipe for limes

greathill's picture

I just received a beautiful box of limes from Hawaii.  These are fresh off the tree and they are the size of grapefruits!  They literally look like green grapefruits.  Any suggestions on a recipe for their use?

Curd, lime-cello, anything (post #70982, reply #1 of 9)

Curd, lime-cello, anything you make with lemons. Are you sure they ARE limes?

What do they look like inside out of curiosity--very juicy?

limes (post #70982, reply #2 of 9)

yes - as a matter of fact my uncle who sent them said the tree was something like 50 years old.  I don't have the letter with me but the tree is sort of in the public domain in their town (Kona) and everyone just helps themselves.  They look pretty juicy.  The skin is rather smooth too, not grainy like a small lime.  and the color is very light lime-green, not the darker lime green I see in the grocery stores.  My husband just wanted to use them for juice but I want to try something else.  I just downloaded a receipe for a lime tart.

Tart all the way (post #70982, reply #4 of 9)

That was going to be my suggestion.  A lime tart would be so good!

Let us know how it turned out.

Wow, I am so envious!  My first thought was margaritas, and I agree that a tart would be wonderful.  Have you ever used tastespotting?

For limecello, here is a recipe for limoncello that could be adapted:

I have made this, but with half the sugar and it was plenty sweet.  Using all regular supermarket limes might be a bit bitter for this recipe, but your limes sound totally different-- bet it would be good!  It would be a great way to use up the zest.

Limes from Kona (post #70982, reply #5 of 9)

thanks for everyone's comments.  I made a lime tart yesterday and it came out wonderful.  The receipe said to let it chill for 4 hours but really, it needs to sit overnight.  It's quite rich - heavy cream and 5 egg yolks.  The zest from the lime was so cool; like little pieces of beautiful dark green moss.  It just came right off the skin.  Because the limes were so large I only needed two to get the required 1/2 cup of juice.  Next I'm going to make lime & ginger scones.  I have a recipe for lemon ginger scones so the substitution should be easy.  I was going to do it yesteray but the day just got away from me and I was tired.  I made some soup yesterday and home made black & white cookies for my daugher for valentine's day (we love those) so lots of cooking.  I'll get the scones made soon and I'll let you all know how they turn out.  Happy Valentines Day!

One more idea (post #70982, reply #6 of 9)

I also spoke to someone this weekend and he recommended a Brazilian drink similar to a mojito.  I can't remember the name but there is a Brazilian liquor and you crush limes into the bottom of the glass, add a sugar syrup and then pour the liquor over it.  sounds deadly!

I gues i'm late for the answer

the drink is called caipirinha and the liquor is cachaca

Go easy because it's really strong !

Sounds yummy (post #70982, reply #7 of 9)

Your tart sounds so yummy.  And the scones should turn out so delicious too.  Please do share a photo if you have time to take it before all the scones are gone.

Happy Belated Valentine's Day

I was just gifted some key (post #70982, reply #8 of 9)

I was just gifted some key limes from a co-worker's tree.  I eneded up using a lemon cupcake recipe and substituted the key limes, the flavor was outstanding.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!
