New messages/replies

Not only has this been poorly designed because there was no input nor testing by the users, but I am beginning to believe that the new forum is not even working technically.

No matter where you see "x new", the numbers are probaly wrong:

If I go to "home" and see "45 new" under "Feedback on Fine Cooking", I would expect to find 45 new messages. But when I get into the "Feedback on Fine cooking" folder, the number of "new" messages is different.

If I go to a discussion where there are 5 "new" messages and click on the "5 new" it will take me to the oldest new message. Many times I cannot locate the number of new messages which are supposed to be there. This is particularly true if there is more than one page in the discussion.

There seem to be phantom "new" messages.

MeanChef, I've been finding (post #67871, reply #1 of 5)

MeanChef, I've been finding the same thing. Some new messages aren't marked as new, esp if they appear on a different page than the first one marked new. The only option seems to be to scroll through every message from the first new one marked through to the end. How that would work on a thread with 100s of posts is beyond me. The functionality of this system out of the box is pathetic. I can live with the poor design (e.g. organge type) but the lack of functionality is a different matter.

I've found the problem with "phantom" new messages. First, if you go to the forum, you will find that anything you haven't read under the new system is marked "new". Worthless. Second, as someone pointed out, only the new messages on the first page are marked, so you get to read through every darn message, even if you have already read them a gazillion times, to see what's new...or just give up and hope you see them someday.

I wonder if Taunton will act the same way they did with the magazine redesign and hopefully find one or two positive comments and stress them to prove we're all thrilled with the redesign? I hope not, because it would really sour me on them.

It doesn't take you to the (post #67871, reply #3 of 5)

It doesn't take you to the oldest new message, it takes you to the first new message in order of where it appears. So, if there are 5 new messages in a thread and one of those is the fifth in order as you scroll through, it will take you to that one first, regardless of the time. If the other new messages are on the same page, then continue scrolling down looking for the red New tag. However, if any of the other new messages is on a subsequent page, you're SOL. When you go to the next page, you'll have lost the red New tag. Useless.

Yes you are correct. At least you will know that all of the rest of the new ones are below where you started and not above. LOL
