New CooksTalk Cheat Sheet

RDA's picture

Hi everyone,

I made some recent posts to help you out with the basics and thought it would be good if you had a cheat sheet you could refer to if you get stuck.

Here are the three basics you need to know to keep you going through the weekend (there's more to come):

How to Add a Post to the Forum

How to Add a Comment to a Post

How to Edit a Post

It's worth mentioning a few tips for navigating the new layout: The main navigation is to the left and you should consult the FAQs for an overview of the new forum. Check the Discussions box for an at-a-glance view of recent topics and replies.

I know it's been an exciting day over here, and there have been some bumps that we'll continue to work through. A huge thank you for all your patience today!

OK this is a small thing (post #67696, reply #1 of 16)

OK this is a small thing given all the larger issues with functionality, but how does one change the silhouette to a woman? That man's profile every time I see one of my posts is starting to creep me out. Or can I get rid of that entirely, that would be even better.

I'm pretty sure there's no way to change your shadow-man to a shadow-woman, but even better. . .upload an avatar (aka profile pic). It's easy: Go to "My Profile," then click "Edit." Scroll down and you'll see the spot where you can upload a photo. Press save when you're done.

I think it would be a huge improvement if the silhouettes were omitted. There is too much scrolling required with all the wasted space.

Is there any way to get:

at the bottom of the page too? It would save time with all the other things that now take so much time.

NO MORE ORANGE NO MORE ORANGE NO MORE ORANGE

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

OK got the orange part, but can you tell me how having the breadcrumbs on the bottom would help save time? Is it just that you want a "Home" button at the bottom, perhaps? Am easy way to get back to the folders listing?

Thanks.

I'd like to see an indication (post #67696, reply #6 of 16)

I'd like to see an indication of where I've already posted.
I'd like an option for "Show uUnread msgs only."
I'm not receiving emails when someone replies so I'd like that.
I'd like an option to not see signature lines or silhouettes; I have a huge screen but they're taking up too much space.
I'd like messages shown in chronological order; the "new" indicator doesn't pop out at me and scrolling through the same messages again and again is confusing and boring.
I find the thread titles very large, meaning that I can't skim through them without lots of scrolling.
I'd also like a way to go to the next or previous thread withouth scrolling way back up to the beginning.
Why is this comment box so small? It's hard to review my post. To gain space, could you take out the "Reply, your name" section right above, both of which seem redundant?
Thanks
Karen

You can expand, or stretch (post #67696, reply #7 of 16)

You can expand, or stretch out, the comment box in the lower right corner. I'm sure there is a technical term for this, but I have not idea what it is.

As for all your other comments, agreed!!

I'm sure there is a techie (post #67696, reply #8 of 16)

I'm sure there is a techie term but I see exactly what you mean. Thanks!

Ditto to everything Canuck (post #67696, reply #10 of 16)

Ditto to everything Canuck said. Plus, get rid of the orange. The color needs to have MORE CONTRAST with the white for reading ease. Why not go back to the old color scheme? Oh yeah, and I want spell checker back!

Pati, FYI--the last time I posted I used the spell checker on my Google tool bar. Works great.

Canuck,
1) You can see a history of your posts by clicking on "My Profile" then "Activity." It tells you what folder you've posted to and when.
2) Once signed in, you can see what folders have new replies. Click on "#new" and it'll take you to the most recent new reply.
3) You can subscribe to a thread in much the same way you did before and get email notifications whenever someone posts a reply. Check the "Notify me when new comments are posted" box.
4) I'm not sure if you can customize your view so you don't see sig lines and avatars. . .will check it out.
5) I can do this. And will. Stay tuned.
6) I hear you.
7) Comment/reply boxes are expandable. click and drag down. Very easy.
They'll be more instrux to come. . .just wanted to address this quickly.

Hi Robyn, Thanks for your (post #67696, reply #13 of 16)

Hi Robyn,
Thanks for your email. One thing--I didn't mean that I want to subscribe to a thread (I never knew I could do that in CT before and I'd never get anything else done if I started doing that!); I'd just like email notification when someone responds to me so I can respond in a timely matter and continue the conversation.

Under profile/activity you (post #67696, reply #14 of 16)

Under profile/activity you can see the folders one has posted in, but there is no link to the actually post. Just think when a folder has 400 messages and you have posted 12 of them. In order to find them you will have to scroll through the entire folder.
As I have stated before the #new is incorrect. True it takes you to the most recent new reply, but you the have to scroll through the entire folder to find the rest. Even then, new posts on pages 2, 3 and etc are no labled as new.

Have no clue what you are talking about! Where is this Notify me, and is this for someone that is answering my post, like before?

The breadcrumbs at the bottom (post #67696, reply #9 of 16)

The breadcrumbs at the bottom would keep you from scrolling all the way back to the top.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Ditto to almost everything (post #67696, reply #11 of 16)

Ditto to almost everything Canuck wrote, Robyn. It's especially hard not to be able to find new posts "to me", and the new messages are often not new at all. I'm tired of reading the same posts numerous times.
