Most important changes we'd like made to new format

kathymcmo's picture

I'm starting a new thread for us to list specific things that are "must haves" as they tweak this new software. Hope that's OK but I am having a lot of trouble sorting through the 77 messages in nonchronological order in the "same forum, new look" thread.
So what are your top 3-5 things that you think essential to get fixed?

To me, the most problematic things are:
1. Not being able to address your reply to a specific person, and therefore not being able to see whom other posters are addressing with their reply. This makes it nearly impossible to have a cogent conversation. I'm fine with not being able to e-mail a poster directly from the thread, but when I read one from Person X, I want to know which Person Y they are responding to.
2. Put the posts in chronological order. If there's a thread with 100 posts, 6 of which are new, you do get taken to the first of the six new posts, but then you have to read through the rest of the 100 posts to find the other five new ones. Taunton promised that this new format would bring CT up to industry standards, but I thought that meant 2009 standards, not 1989.
3. Could we please condense the left navigation column so that all threads open show, because I'm pretty sure there are more open in say, the Kitchen appliances folder than are showing.
4. Make it possible to scroll up and down in the Discussions navigation bar separately from the middle of the page where the threads are.

I was going to add this (post #67661, reply #61 of 68)

I was going to add this comment to my just-posted comment to Ann about the permalinks but after 3 min of searching I can't find it. I have checked the notify me of new comments box for this thread, but I've not rec'd any notification anywhere I can find even though there have been several new comments since I checked the box.

Add that to Robyn's Report A Bug thread. :-)

This is addressed to Robyn: I (post #67661, reply #53 of 68)

This is addressed to Robyn: I am slowly getting used to the new format, yet there are still a few things that irk me enough to complain about them ;-)

The comment box is way too small, is there a way I could make it larger on my screen? (Dragging the corners of the box does NOT work) And while I'm at it, is there a way to change that font? Possibly to the same that appears in the posted message?

I am mostly typing on a laptop, so the screen size is a tad small, which makes for a lot of scrolling, especially if I want to get back to the title page of a folder to follow another discussion. Is it possible to put the links you provide on top of the page (Home › Most important changes we'd like made to new format › Reply to comment) on the bottom as well? That would make my life a lot less scrolled up *g*

Thanks for listening,
Astrid

Robyn. I am still having a (post #67661, reply #57 of 68)

Robyn. I am still having a problem with the "new" listing. Evidently it is still only identifying posts on the first page. Can that be fixed? The numbers don't come anywhere near the number listed if some are on the second and subsequent pages.

And your comment is not (post #67661, reply #58 of 68)

And your comment is not marked "new" for me--in fact nothing is. May have something to do with the permalink.

Gretchen, I THINK what (post #67661, reply #63 of 68)

Gretchen, I THINK what happened is what MM referred to above – the little red ‘news’ disappear once you click on the next page, In this particular post, like you, I didn’t see ‘new’ on page 2 because the first new reply was on page one. It was red but when I went to page 2, all the remaining ‘news’ were gone. The only way for a page 2 red ‘new’ to show is if there is no reply on the first page and the discussion opens directly to the second page.

This would be irrelevant if ‘new’ only opened unread messages.

Well, isn't that special!! (post #67661, reply #66 of 68)

Well, isn't that special!! LOL. I "think" however, that at one time it stayed "new", but shoot, I have no clue now. What a mess. I have NEVER had it open to the second page. Always had to punch the "2" so I am not sure that is what is happening either. AND you know what, Don't really care. Thanks for trying to help, nonetheless. More than Taunton is doing. ;o)

No, it never stayed New on (post #67661, reply #67 of 68)

No, it never stayed New on subsequent pages, or if you reply to a post before reading all the New ones on a page. That's been one of the bigger complaints from day one. Sigh...
