Most important changes we'd like made to new format

kathymcmo's picture

I'm starting a new thread for us to list specific things that are "must haves" as they tweak this new software. Hope that's OK but I am having a lot of trouble sorting through the 77 messages in nonchronological order in the "same forum, new look" thread.
So what are your top 3-5 things that you think essential to get fixed?

To me, the most problematic things are:
1. Not being able to address your reply to a specific person, and therefore not being able to see whom other posters are addressing with their reply. This makes it nearly impossible to have a cogent conversation. I'm fine with not being able to e-mail a poster directly from the thread, but when I read one from Person X, I want to know which Person Y they are responding to.
2. Put the posts in chronological order. If there's a thread with 100 posts, 6 of which are new, you do get taken to the first of the six new posts, but then you have to read through the rest of the 100 posts to find the other five new ones. Taunton promised that this new format would bring CT up to industry standards, but I thought that meant 2009 standards, not 1989.
3. Could we please condense the left navigation column so that all threads open show, because I'm pretty sure there are more open in say, the Kitchen appliances folder than are showing.
4. Make it possible to scroll up and down in the Discussions navigation bar separately from the middle of the page where the threads are.

My DH has just sat while I've (post #67661, reply #43 of 68)

My DH has just sat while I've showed him the new improved site. I was having a huge vent and said "and what about my Christmas baking?? I can't find the info I need on marshmallows" and I think that is where I lost him.

The logic of having out of sequence posts he understood though. It really does feel like that is something that simply cannot be changed however.

I agree with you about the baking....I had several recipes in mind for the holidays that I had just last week seen and was going to copy, but figured I could always find them...and now poof no search available for the forum. I wish they had given us 24 hours notice, but I guess we never could have imagined the mess.

Heather, I, too, hate the new (post #67661, reply #42 of 68)

Heather, I, too, hate the new format and can't find anything. But please, please don't leave. I'd miss you tremendously.

Either Taunton will fix this mess, which I sincerely hope will happen and soon, or we can all decamp together to a more manageable place like the people at Breaktime seem to have done.

I refuse to scroll through (post #67661, reply #22 of 68)

I refuse to scroll through all the posts to find out if this has been dealt with.
PLEASE don't make us scroll through all posts that we have read to perhaps find the beginning of the thread AFTER the last post we read.
After Gourmet Magazine printed their MAJOR cookbook in yellow, I do wonder why FC has chosen a light orange for their prompts.

If you look at each post by a poster, by the time the total number of colors are used it looks like a rainbow--some in the title, some in the name, some in the text, some in the various taglines used. IT is cacophony.

Hi Gretchen, Re. finding the (post #67661, reply #33 of 68)

Hi Gretchen,

Re. finding the new posts, try this:
When you are in the "home" view (and you probably need to be logged in), click on the orange (#new) in the left hand column to see only the new replies. The folders you have not opened since the change in format will all be new to you and yes, you will have to scroll through them to find the new replies. It's only once, then you can go directly to the new replies as described above.

It's possible that it's only working for some people - I hope you will be one of them!

Cindy, the only problem is (post #67661, reply #68 of 68)

Cindy, the only problem is that this will only take you to the first 'new' reply in a thread. If you want to see the others, you'll have to scroll and skim all threads or go back and repeat the clicking on the 'new' and hoping it will remember you already read the first 'new' post.

I also find the orange text (post #67661, reply #23 of 68)

I also find the orange text difficult to read and tiring for older, weaker eyes. Some darker color (black? blue?) in bold would be much easier for me.

I agree with Gretchen that if you've read some of the posts, the next time you come back, it would be nice if it started at that most recent point so one didn't have to scroll each and every time. Inefficient use of the reader's time.

Oh, and another thing. Once you're finished you should be able to go back without hitting the back button up top or scrolling to the top. It would be nice to be able to have a back button that scrolls with the posts along with the ability to choose a different topic if desired.

OK moderator, there's one (post #67661, reply #26 of 68)

OK moderator, there's one more thing that really should be rectified. Let's say I click the "new" link in the lefthand navigation windwo to take me to a thread that's been open for a while. It lands me on the new post, which is waaaaayyyyy at the bottom of the screen. Once I've read it, if I want to go back to the list of topics in the lefthand navigation bar, I have to scroll waaaaaaayyyy up to get there. This is a royal pain!

Absolutely, there is way too much scrolling required.

Am I missing it? Seems no way to tell if someone has read a post that you responded to.

Yes, that was a good feature of the other format! And I miss not being able to copy and paste a graphic into the body of the message. :(

This is to Jean--What was a good feature of the other format!? I can't tell which post you were replying to?! Sigh. :-)

Also, I have discovered that if I click on the folder name, say Baking, then all the Baking threads show up in the main of the page. I find that much easier to then pick a thread. And, I am opening each thread in a new tab. I find it easier to just close the tab rather than hitting Back or Scrolling around on the page to find the Topic list again.

I agree with you on this, it is cumbersome and slows down navigation.

I thought "Recent Replies" (post #67661, reply #34 of 68)

I thought "Recent Replies" was going to be helpful, but it turns out to only show a limited # of characters and there's no way to get directly to the rest of that post without going back to the entire thread and scrolling, scrolling, scrolling to find it.

Please either show the entire post in the Recent Replies list or provide a link to it.

I don't know if people have already voiced this concern (sorry but there too many messages to go through) but I really don't like that I can't go being logged on to the fine cooking website to the CT forum. When I click on the CT forum I have to re-sign in every time. It is a pain.

Please, may we have returned (post #67661, reply #46 of 68)

Please, may we have returned to us a link to navigate among the other Taunton forums? I like to cook, but I also spend a lot of time at my sewing machines. I want to be able to pass from Gatherings to CT without having to find my bookmark and log in all over again. Thank you.

Kathy, I see a checkable box under this comment box that says, "Notify me when new comments are posted". Is that new? And where will I be notified? Would I ever LOVE to be notified--I have the worst time finding replies.

Given the amount of traffic on this site (or the amount we used to have) I wouldn't want an email every time someone replies to a thread. Unless it were a thread that I created asking for help on something. You could get dozens of emails saying there's a new post to each thread you've asked for notification.

I'm experimenting with the permalinks. It's definitely not as easy as clicking on the "in reply to" number, but at least it gets you back to the post you're replying to. And, as someone pointed out, each post has a number--maybe there is hope that those will reappear.

Yes Ann the permalink takes (post #67661, reply #60 of 68)

Yes Ann the permalink takes me back to the post that's being replied to, but once I'm on the permalink I can't easily get back to the post I was at before I hit the permalink. And of course, the few "new" labels disappear. So it's a fix of sorts but it creates its own hassles.

Yes, I keep opening things in a new page or a new tab,so I don't lose the New marker or my spot. No it's not perfect, but at least they're trying to fix some things and as they fix other items on our list, the overall performance will improve. Hopefully. :-)
