Take the doors off
For reasons I cannot possibly logically explain I play CafeWorld on FaceBook, and when your cafe is not in a state to do business you take the doors off to stop any more diners coming into your cafe. This prevents your popularity (buzz) rating dropping and gives you a chance to sort out the problems before your grand re-opening. Looking at the postings here, they are so few and far between that it really is very sad, like visiting your favourite restaurant which used to be "reservations only" to find that you can now have any seat in the house at whatever time you want it.
I would humbly suggest that now is the time to take the doors off CooksTalk, put up a sign saying "Closed for refurbishment" and reopen when you have a product that you can be proud of and the former (and new) users can bring back to a vibrant and informative community. What we have here now is just dreadful, death by a thousand cuts. Taunton and CooksTalk deserves better.

Seems like it might be a good idea, and could potentially make the fixes quicker I would think?
P.S. Cannot believe that YOU of all people have been sucked into one of those games. Hilarious!

Good idea Ashley (although some might complain of no access to archives I suppose--not me).
Would add that before they rehang the doors, they should invite some regulars to beta-test the new and improved Drupal CT.

If they gave us fair warning that it was going to be offline for n weeks that would probably do it.

I don't see that there'd be much point. It's not going to make it easier to implement the changes and it's only going to chase the people who do participate here away.
It would just be an even louder and even more public acknowledgement of failure.

Have to agree with you. If there was a complete break/blackout, how would we know when to come back. But even a couple of us coming now and then keeps it "in touch" with anyone who happens by.
In case anyone doesn't think that having the "my read messages" hidden (or however we put it), go to one of the older threads that have been reactivated (the lasagna one today, for example) and has a "new" post. I went to it, and then had NO idea what the original post was so had to do the "BIG SCROLL" up to see. It will always be a thorn.
I think you are correct. (post #69036, reply #19 of 26)
I think you are correct. Ashley's idea would put FC in far worse a light than already exists. This whole thing could have been executed much better, but waving the white flag now has little merit.
MEAN CHEF RECIPESYes, you're right, ashleyd. (post #69036, reply #6 of 26)
Yes, you're right, ashleyd. They should go back to square one and start over, or, better yet, return to the old format. As it stands now, it seems to be the end of a very active community. So sad.
Ashley, I think you have made (post #69036, reply #8 of 26)
Ashley, I think you have made some of the best comments on the whole forum change, such as asking what Taunton wants to get out of this. Closing the doors is a good idea, but I wonder what would constitute "fixed"? The worst thing would be to have a grand re-opening, only to be faced with yet another wave of overwhelming negativity from "the community".
The other problem is the timeframe-- how long will it take? I'm not sure Taunton can even quantify that.
Maybe I have been watching too many nature podcasts with my daughter, but I think the site will evolve toward usability-- having feedback from actual users (you, Gretchen, Adele, and others) will help guide the process. Then, as with a biological community that has been disrupted, the community will gradually re-establish itself. Have you noticed an increase in new "faces" around here?
What do you think?

"Have you noticed an increase in new "faces" around here?"
No. At best it's a few old faces that haven't been around for a while.

No, not particularly any great number of "newbies". I ONLY come over here to sort of stand behind my stance that "I will be patient", but there literally DROVES of folks who used to be here who don't and won't. And patience is not an infinite item.
Just curious, because I can't quite be sure--were you a long time user at the former CT? Come often, and post? I ask because you just don't seem to miss the features that made that site a true gem of community--the ease of literally almost talking back and forth--which is what is so dismally missing here because of the format--not because of lack of participation. As I say, just curious because it is the pattern of usage that is being missed by the defectors--and me.

Hi Gretchen--
Yes, I was a longtime user, but under a different name. I know who Ipke is, and remember when Max was born. Yeah, I miss the back-and-forth too, at least some of it. Yours is the best explanation I have read as to the root nature of the problem-- hard to chat when your replies get scattered. I suppose I interact with the site differently than you-all.
What I do not miss about the old site is the negativity, about the magazine redesign, the cake on the cover-- I can't see why Taunton would want to maintain and pay for a site where the "community" spends its time trashing the magazine and discussing how they are going to cancel their subscriptions. I agree with Ashley that Taunton needs to figure out why they want a discussion forum. I rather like the magazine and I would hate for FC to go the way of Gourmet because they were spending too much on internet 'content' without revenue return.
I agree with you that some aspects of the community did make it a gem-- I have definitely benefited from that emotional support myself. That I miss-- I hope this all blows over someday.

Hi Jean!
It is nice to 'see' you. I was "iguana", but I got into one too many political arguments-- I think it was about global warming or somesuch. I went away in disgust (mostly disgust with myself), but I did miss the site. So I decided to come back with a new, less reptilian persona. Also, I have a rule to stay out of political discussions. No more internet rhubarbs for me!

Thank you, I am very touched that you both remember me. Clara just turned 5 and is a beautiful girl with a passion for Ancient Egypt, of all things. I will have to upload a picture, she is so beautiful and fun.

You can close the main board (post #69036, reply #11 of 26)
You can close the main board and then when it is ready set up an address which will divert to the "test area" and let a number of testers have access to it to help with the final tuning. Once it is ready for release you remove the block and away you go (it's slightly more complicated than that, but you probably get the picture).
Not many new faces as far as I can see.
