Search is working!

I'm happy to report that Search is working. Have at it, and of course, let me know about any glitches that come up.

I'm very glad to hear that (post #68522, reply #1 of 17)

I'm very glad to hear that the search function is fixed. I tried searching a couple of items and now am puzzled. Because we can't search by date or "in the last XXX" or "posted by," what are the rules for how the results come up? I searched "Santa" and the first page has results from 2009, 2004 and other years. Will we eventually be able to search by the parameters listed above (and previously available on CT)? If not, how are these results presented? For some searches, we could end up with many pages of results with no way to sort them.
Thanks

Karen

Yeah baby!

This is the search field that us up top, on the right (this hand) side. I put in Peppermint Bark and it brought it up from newest post to last.

This is WONDERFUL!

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Is it supposed to work like (post #68522, reply #3 of 17)

Is it supposed to work like the Google search? I typed in cookie + anise + Jean and ended up looking at a thread about herbs used in fritattas. :( No sign of the anise cookie recipe I know I posted at one time.
I don't share Adele's enthusiasm as yet.

Well douse water on me! LOL I tried to search for a couple of different things after seeing your post and got weird stuff too.

It's a start.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Robyn, Thanks for your (post #68522, reply #5 of 17)

Robyn,

Thanks for your efforts to bring back the search. This is a good start.

But, only the original post in the thread is linked. If what you are looking for is in a comment or reply, you have to scroll through all the replies and comments to find it. It would be much more helpful if the results had links to all messages that contained the key word; whether a post, comment, or reply. Our threads go on wild tangents and what one is looking for may be burried deep in a thread. For example, I am looking for a recipe for duck confit. I clicked on one of the search results that looked promising and had to scroll through most of the 83 replies and comments to find the word confit on the 3rd page.

Also, What is a page type search?

And, I would also like to be able to narrow the date range for the search, or at least be able to put the results in chronologic (there's that word again!) order.

Thanks,
Cindy

Dumb question: other than by (post #68522, reply #6 of 17)

Dumb question: other than by clicking on the link in your topic post above, or the similar one in the "Forum Status Updates" box, how do I get to the search page from which I can do an "Advanced Search"?

I'm disappointed with how poorly search works. It takes you only to the top of a topic.

Advanced search takes you only to the top of the topic, not to the post where the search phrase appears.

There should also be the ability to sort search results and to specify in the Advanced Search options what time period you want the search to cover.

And the standard search syntax for advanced searches (http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=136861) should be working.

Let me add a couple of notes (post #68522, reply #8 of 17)

Let me add a couple of notes on this:
1)@Steve: to get to search, type a keyword into the box at the top right corner in the FC header.

2)Everybody: The forum isn't fully indexed right now, so there will be some hit or miss starting out. What we have in place right now is meant to help immediately, recognizing that it's been a hardship on the community not to be able to search for holiday recipes.

Search, at the moment, works as a straight-up Google keyword search (for what's indexed, of course). After the holidays, I'll sit down with my team and see what kind of enhancements we're able to make for more focused results and how they display.

More on this as we go. It's just a start.

re 1): The links in your topic post and Forum Status Update box both take you to a page that allows you to do either a simple keyword search or an "advanced search." Other than those two links, neither of which seems to be the right permanent home for the function, there doesn't seem to be another way to get to the advanced search function.

I'd suggest adding a "Search" link to the box headed with my UserID that currently has links for Home, Post New, My Profile, My Inbox, Members, Recent Posts, Recent Replies, FAQ, and Log Out.

Steven, another way to the (post #68522, reply #15 of 17)

Steven, another way to the Advanced Search: leave the search box empty and click on the orange circle at the right.

Robyn, will there be an ‘advanced search' link by the search box? The word ‘search’ will be added like the other forums, but they don’t have an advanced search link. Clicking on ‘search’ with the box empty works but that’s not obvious.

At this point the function is worthless. I have put in two different things and just get loads of posts that do not have the recipe in them.

I agree the search is still dubious. The search results link only to the first post in the whole discusasion instead of the post itself.

What happened to the search of fine cooking? Or the links to my favorites etc.?

I find the search vehicle (post #68522, reply #17 of 17)

I find the search vehicle simply too frustrating. I don't get the relevant post, which I know exists, but I get pages and pages of results, which would take far too long to go through. I really liked the old results, where you saw a side-bar of brief excerpts and could go where you chose. And yes, this has wreaked havoc with my cooking this holiday season!

In general, I am finding the new website to be so frustrating as to drive me away every time I try to visit it. I hope it improves!! I know this must be naive, but -- why can't Taunton simply return to the old forum, since everyone finds this new one so frustrating?
