Comments, Newest First

RDA's picture

I made a change this morning. The comments were originally ordered from oldest to newest. I've just ordered them from newest to oldest. Try it out. If you don't like it I can change it back to the way it was.

Thanks,
Robyn

I'd like the way we had them (post #68091, reply #5 of 44)

I'd like the way we had them in the good old days; oldest first (but invisible if I choose to see only unread messages). It is counterintuitive for me to read upwards to catch up on a thread.
Sorry if this is a PITA.

Yes, but see, the problem is (post #68091, reply #6 of 44)

Yes, but see, the problem is that they're only ordered chronologically under the post that they're each replying to. So, you still have new posts intermingled throughout a thread.

And, personally, I prefer oldest first, so I'm not reading the replies to older posts before I read the original post.

Right, so it's all still a jumble of new posts intermingled depending on which post they replied to.

And, I really prefer oldest first...

For me, part of the (post #68091, reply #10 of 44)

For me, part of the difficulty is that "comments" and "replies" seem to be two different things.

This is a comment, and will likely be displayed first, but if I reply to an earlier post I have a feeling it will still display below that post (and slightly indented).

ETA: And I was correct!

Is there any way to make "comments" and "replies" the same thing, so that all responses in a thread will display in chronological order from oldest to newest, ie:

Hello from Ann! (12:00)
- Response from Tracy to Ann (12:01)
- Response from Jillsifer to Ann (12:04)
- Response from Madmom to Jillsifer (12:08
- Response from Tracy to Jillsifer (12:12)
- Response from Ann to Madmom (12:15)
- Response from MeanChef to Ann (12:17)

Instead of
Hello from Ann! (12:00)
- Response from Tracy to Ann (12:01)
- Response from Jillsifer to Ann (12:04)
___- Response from Madmom to Jillsifer (12:08)
______- Response from Ann to Madmom (12:15)
___- Response from Tracy to Jillsifer (12:12)
- Response from MeanChef to Ann (12:17)

Etc etc and so on?

Well, as long as they can fix the bugs w/r/t editing and new message indicators.

As near as I can tell comments are just replies to the original post.

Right, and not at all my (post #68091, reply #43 of 44)

Right, and not at all my point.

A "reply" posts differently than a "comment." Replies are indented, where comments are not, and that's what throws off the chronological display.

Robyn, I don't think that's (post #68091, reply #8 of 44)

Robyn, I don't think that's quite what is needed, we need the posts listed in chronological order, so that if the thread had 10 posts that you read yesterday, and today there are 7 more, the link on the navigation bar would take you to post No. 11 through 17. Putting the newest first means having to scroll down to the bottom to find the oldest "new" post, then scroll up to read them. A small improvement over the "find the easter eggs strewn about the siz pages of the thread" approach that we started with, but not quite good enough IMHO.

I agree with the other (post #68091, reply #11 of 44)

I agree with the other posters here... this isn't quite what we wanted.

An example of what I want to see is this:
First post in thread (call this A), posted at 1 pm
First comment to A (call this B), posted at 1:30 pm
Second comment to A (C), posted at 1:45 pm
First comment to B (D), posted at 1:47 pm
First comment to C (E), posted at 1:50 pm
Second comment to C (F), posted at 1:55 pm
Third comment to A (G), posted at 2:00 pm
etc.

Does this make sense?

Robyn, Thank you for your (post #68091, reply #12 of 44)

Robyn,

Thank you for your efforts. As others have said, what we are asking for is that ALL the posts be in chronologic order, ie. in the order they were posted. That way, when we click on the orange (#new) we see all the new posts and only the new posts.

Having the posts numbered (post #68091, reply #14 of 44)

Having the posts numbered would solve the problem. Then they appear at the end, but you can go back and see what it was replying to, if you don't remember. THAT is the way the other board worked smoothly.

Having the posts numbered (post #68091, reply #15 of 44)

Having the posts numbered would solve the problem.

Not necessarily. It won't matter if all the posts are numbered, if there's nothing on a new post saying which post it is in response to.

A "quote" function would help, because it would include the text from the post being replied to in the new post (the responder can usually edit the text to only include the pertinent sentence or two).

It may not be possible to have numbered posts and "in reply to [post number] with this platform.

A quote function would also solve thep roblem, wouldn't it? Of course, it shifts the responsibility to the poster, but that was partially true under the old forum as well.

I've seen the quote function (post #68091, reply #32 of 44)

I've seen the quote function used on other boards and don't like it at all.
But that being said--I can only stand to spend about 10 minutes here before I go nuts and have to leave. Maybe that's a good thing???

Absolutely not true -- I have the option to edit my earlier post in this thread, posted at 12:23.

But bizarrely, I don't have the option to edit my post from 12:17... must be a bug.

I think that as they're going in and tinkering with things, it intermittently and temporarily affects our access to edit previous posts.

Please don't get snippy with me, I'm trying to help you.

FWIW, I can still go back to edit my 12:23 post, but cannot edit other ones, newer and older than that.

Maybe it's something to do with whether or not a post is a "conmment" (a response to the initial thread post) or a "reply" (a resonse to a response)?

Or (more likely) it's just buggy.

Trying one more to time to add.

Return the feature of opening posts that are unread to me. These two items are my deal breakers if they can't be delivered, I think. Scrolling through hundreds of posts is just ridiculous.

I wish some of the Taunton folk would come on the board as "posters" and utilize the platform and see how it sits with them.
