While I can understand the need for advertising on this free-to-the-user site, I don't see how anyone can think we are the target market for the ad I get when I open Cookstalk's homepage. It is an ad for Filipina women.

Please try to keep the ads to cooking related items. I, for one, find the Filipina women ad extremely sexist and offensive. Especially since more than 50% of the forum users are women.

Somethng like that happened (post #68612, reply #1 of 17)

Somethng like that happened to me on Epicurious one time and I COMplained that it was basically a porn ad. Apparently it was not "their" ad. I have forgotten what the techs said caused it, but it wasn't an ad that should be there. I wonder if you'll get any answer to this. I would certainly agree--I don't ever go there, so haven't seen it.

I'm hoping to get an answer. (post #68612, reply #2 of 17)

I'm hoping to get an answer. The ad is for a dating agency - or that's what it looks like. NOT the right target market here, or is it ;-)

Maybe you're getting them (post #68612, reply #5 of 17)

Maybe you're getting them because of your nickname.

We don't all get the same ads (post #68612, reply #6 of 17)

We don't all get the same ads on this site? I know I always see McCormick on the bottom right and I have a public service ad from Google up top. I can't see Taunton allowing an ad like your getting. I wonder what's up. Oh wait, you said home page? I'll have to go look and see what I get.
EDIT: 'Home" had Dole salad on the side panel and Google Chrome up top. How weird.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Huh, I don't get an ad (post #68612, reply #8 of 17)

Huh, I don't get an ad there-- I am running Camino on a Mac. Now I see what I am missing. Odd that the ads would not be tailored to cooking interests.

Sounds fishy to me. Have you checked your computer for adware or other nasties? Run your anti-virus program, too.

I get no ads using Firefox and Adblock. Bliss.

I haven't had any ads either. (post #68612, reply #10 of 17)

I haven't had any ads either. It does sound like some kind of virus though, doesn't it?

I'm using DH's company (post #68612, reply #11 of 17)

I'm using DH's company laptop, we have a good firewall, and the computer is absolutely virusfree.

The ads are not pop-ups, but banner type ads on below the logo lines and above the forum, sometimes I have banner ads on the bottom of the page, as well. On the side I usually see ads for things like Dole, Campbell's products...

The banner ad on top is for a Microfinance company (www.kiva.org) and labelled as 'Public Service Ads by Google'. The Dating service ads are .com addresses.

But have you checked for adware, malware, etc? Just thinking it may be your computer as no one else has complained of this. There are good free programs like Spybot and Ad-aware, for example.

@assibams: I can assure you (post #68612, reply #15 of 17)

@assibams: I can assure you that the ad you saw isn't one from FC. Dole, McCormick, and Ghirardelli: Yes. Sexist or offensive ads: Absolutely not.

Looking at the same ad again (post #68612, reply #16 of 17)

Looking at the same ad again while I type this. Does that mean that Taunton has no control over the banner ads (both on top and bottom of the page. Most seem to be Google generated ads)? Odd.
Oh, and re: the suggestions of malware or spyware: I only get these ads on Cookstalk, nowhere else.

I only got them on Epicurious (post #68612, reply #17 of 17)

I only got them on Epicurious also. I think the suggestion to check malware is good. Or maybe Robyn can ask the Techs what to do. I wish I could remember what they told me on EPI but it has been a couple of years. No one else got them (and others have gotten things I didn't get) there also.
