Thanks, Dixie! My particular travails were making me think that, too.

Boy, they definitely want you to have a Saturday in there, one way or another. Best fare I've found so far is @$208? from SAN to YVR Sat-Mon--longer than I planned to stay. Can't even get to SEA same day on time to meet up w/MC, well, maybe for $500. So, a SEA or Bremerton (aunt's place, near SEA) or BLI (Bellingham) (alternate airport on the way to Vancouver) stayover seems in order. Frankly, a bunk at a Y would work if I'm cutting time close. I will only have a small backpack.

I went to a lot of web work planning another trip and then those damn terrorists blew me away so to speak. I think I've healed enough to fly, and doggone if the dates/times are just a total screwup for my schedule.

BTW Wolvie, I bet it would be cheaper for me to fly to your neck of the woods than to SEA! For that matter, maybe I could get to YVR via wherever you're flying out of for just as cheap. Sheesh.

So, Sandra, can you remind us of all the details? Monday, Jan 14, at ? restaurant at 12:30. Jeans are OK. Who all is coming for sure or for maybe? I'm still a maybe :-(

I'll come back and edit this w/a link to the previous thread, but would appreciate it if someone (Peter? Glenys?) would link closer to the maps posted if you get there before I do! I also want a link to the Inn Sandra mentioned. I definitely have some re/searching to do!

Thanks, Dixie. And I'm w/you re I don't Check Messages :-)

Kai, here's a link to the Sylvia:
http://www.sylviahotel.com/
There's also a very decent Y in downtown Vancouver. (and probably another one in Seattle - they seem to be everywhere..;^) ) If you do get to make this a slightly longer trip than originally planned, don't worry - we'll make sure you see and do lots and lots.

Oh, and the restaurant is Aqua Riva, check it out here: http://www.aquariva.com/

Thanks, Sandra--great hotel, food at Aqua Riva sounds great!

Earliest approval will be 1/3, so it's sounding chancy for an advance purchase discount, darn.

I'm tempted to watch these fares and see what specials come up from now on, if this doesn't work for me this time.

Kai,

I don't quite understand what you mean by:

"I'll come back and edit this w/a link to the previous thread, but would appreciate it if someone (Peter? Glenys?) would link closer to the maps posted if you get there before I do!"

Off to work for a day or so. Will check when I get back.

Cheers,

Peter

kai - I will be flying to Seattle and driving to Vancouver. I arrive on Jan 11. I plan on staying overnite, then heading into Vancouver, It is definitely cheaper with a Sat in the plans. If you want to meet up with me, that's doable too. Maybe we can meet up with MC for dinner or something that nite. I will be coming back to Seattle after the lunch on the 14th is over. I am flying back to my neck of the woods on Tuesday AM.

OK, I am so excited I can't even punctuate. Tix are transferrable. Now I need a cheap pension-type place to stay in SEA the nite before and after, near the airport. Hints?

I know MC won't be able to chime in for a week or so. Wolvie, where are you staying? (You can email me privately @ kaiforchi@aol.com) I'll still only be coming to SEA Sun PM and leaving Tues AM as I will take advantage of MC's kind offer of a ride, and it's not possible to stay longer and too complicated to stay w/Aunt :/

More later :-)

The Marriott at the airport is charging $69.00 per nite right now, kai! I fly in on Friday. That's where I'm staying - I'll be driving to Vancouver on Sat. Wish you could come in sooner! I am staying at the Marriott Residence Inn once I'm in Vancouver. (if I can find it!!)

I am driving back to Seattle after the lunch on Monday as well. I fly out Tues AM, so I am staying at the Marriott airport hotel again on Monday nite - maybe we could go to dinner??

Just popping in to wish everyone a great Holiday Season and a Happy and Healthy New Year! When all of you get together please have two or three drinks for me......I'm still trying to salvage my sanity from dealing with the general public-almost lost it the other day....cheers!

Wolvie, how did you snag that? They are charging (according to their site) $119/night--which is just frankly too much to spend for two night's of sleep, not counting lunch. Including gratuities, >$300 (not to mention airfare value of ~$300) is too obscene an amount for a meal, even among fine chefs whom I'd love to meet. Oh well, it was a lovely thought!

Hi Kai,

have you checked out Sandra's hotel in VR? Rates at CDN$65. That's US$43. I think any number of us could pick you up if you made it through to VR any day before the 14th. For instance I land at noon on the 11th and return to work on the 17th. Let us know how your plans evolve.

Cheers,

Peter

I went back and checked - the $69.00 rate was for a Fri/Sat nite. On Monday nite, I am paying the $119.00 - sorry, didn't check that out closely enough.

Yes, and that would be perfect if flying into VR, and would be my pref if I could get enough time off, from work or home. It's now becoming clear (duh) that I am also adding two days vacation to the cost of this and seems way too indulgent for my comfort zone. Oh well, there will be other opportunities, I'm sure!

LOL Sandra, I was thinking--what if I put off this trip and spending recklessly, and died. Would I regret it? Who knows? I certainly wouldn't because I'd be dead!

OTOH, I really would like to actually visit VR, not just fly up for a meal/meeting w/cyberfriends. My splurges in 2002 will be on home repair, so long overdue. I'm not saying I will not be there for the meal, just that I will not be taking advantage of the free miles that require I spend two nights in SEA. If I can fly in and out the same day for $200 (plus one vacation day), I think I would gift myself w/that, so I'll keep checking last-minute fares.

Kai - glad that you are not giving up. If you are checking last minute fares, here's my favorite:
http://www.farechase.com
It directs you to the airline with the current lowest fares, and changes by the minute practically. Lowest fare return SAN-YVR this morning was $207, now it's up to $227, tomorrow it could be $99.

Thanks Aussie! I've been doing expedia and whatnot and googling, etc. Main prob is that Southwest doesn't fly out of SD in time to meet up w/MC in Seattle to drive up that morning, so I have to sleep over--not a good use of my $ IMHO. Likewise leaving the eve of the event; I'll have to sleep over to catch a morning flight.

Why these fares fluctuate so much is beyond me. I found a RT flight for $3500!!!!

$3500.00? A deal at double the price!

Just want to ask if you guys would put up with an old gray-haired lady from Texas? My granddaughter's surgery was postponed, and I can get a flight for $258 if I leave here on 1/12 and return on 1/15 - can someone let me know what the story is on hotels, etc.? I would really love to see everyone.

MadMom, Kai, and anyone else who might be thinking of joining us, please check out the Sylvia - rates are cheap (about $43 US/night), rooms are clean (if basic) and there is no hotel in the world that has a better location, or more funky charm.

Wow! This thing is really taking on a life of its own!
