Toronto-fest again?

Nightrider's picture

Hey folks,

I've been chatting with Rhea via e-mail, and we've been thinking that it might be time for another fest.  I'd love to meet some of the folks here that I don't know yet.  Anyone else interested?

I'm chiming...

I'll be coming from the west end, so I'll be driving.  Up for dinner - Mexican would be great, but happy to go with the majority.

This is the Mexican restaurant on the Danforth - www.elsol.ca

From what I've heard, the food is good, but the service can be spotty.  I've only been once, and it was over a year ago.

I'm easy about the food too. But I'm looking forward to seeing everyone.

I'm good with anything that everybody wants.. I like all food.. as long as it's done well. I'm coming from Oakville, so if I took the train (the station is close to home)to limit the number of cars, can anyone direct me from Union?? Or can we have a central meeting place if you are willing to shuttle Karen? I'll check schedules and see how late trains run to come home.

I can pick you up at Union, if we're then heading back east. I know there's a GO train stop at Main Street in the east end, but I assume every train stops at Union and not all will stop at Main. It's no problem to pick you and anyone else up there.

I can't imagine we'll be really late; I should admit now that I'm usually falling asleep by 10:30ish. :)

K... then I'll check schedules, and won't add my car to the entourage; thank you for offering to pick me up. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone... no matter where we end up.
Have we got a start time yet?
Are we doing just dinner, or dinner and something else?
If we end up on the Danforth I'd love a chance to drop in to the Big Carrot; haven't been there forever. If not, then it'll be a good reason for me to go back another day.

I'd love a stop at the Big Carrot as well.

So...for ideas that have been put forth so far, we have:

Distillery District - SOMA chocolate, bread

T&T Supermarket

St. John's organic bakery

Big Carrot

Fresh from the Farm ("my" Mennonite meat & other stuff store)

Dinner somewhere on the Danforth

I think that sounds like enough for at least a full afternoon + dinner!  So, Karen, if you're going to picking Silvana up at Union, does it make sense to go to the Distillery District first (almost downtown) and then head east from there?

Canuck's picture

Sure, that sounds good. After Distillery, T&T I guess, if people are interested, and then up to Danforth? Maybe start around noon so we could eat our way around? :)

Now that's a plan! ;-)
Noon sounds good to me as long as everybody else can make it... I particularly like the concept of "eating our way around". <BIG GRIN>

Always interested in a new T&T.. the ones I'm familiar with have the best dim sum... and BBQ'd duck... and pork.... good for the Nibblefest.

LOL, I thought about mentioning the Big Carrot but realized how much money I'd save by avoiding it! I've been there every week for about the last month and am trying to break my addition to Fred's Cheese Bread and the Potato Bread. Sigh. However, I'm happy to throw that into the mix and suggest that we cross the street to Alex's Cheese if anyone wants Nielsen Massey vanilla or other goodies.

Do you think meeting early afternoon, shopping for a few hours, and then doing dinner is feasible? I don't know how far people will be travelling.

I checked train schedules, and there is one that can get me there for 12:15. Going home is no problem, they run pretty much every hour until fairly late.

ehBeth, Courgette and Wolvie had expressed interest at the very beginning, so if we don't hear from them it might be worth giving the a nudge?

April 12th?

I've got a Tafelmusik lecture and concert starting at 7 p.m.

I'd love to get together with everyone in the afternoon, sounds like some great ideas are percolating.

If I can hitch a ride with you, I can transit to the concert and not worry about taking the car home and then heading out (more time for festing!).

Thanks for the note.

I'm looking forward to this.

I'm picking up Silvana at Union and would happily add you if you're coming downtown or to the east end; where are you coming from and to?

Does it work better for me to pick up Silvana and anyone else coming from west/central?  I can pass right by Union Station on my way to the east end.

Thanks; that's a kind offer. I don't mind at all either way. Maybe we should see who else is coming in, when, and to where, and have two pickups if necessary. We could also leave one vehicle in the T&T lot and pile into my van, if we want to cut down on cars and parking. Whatever's easiest.

Works for me either way as well - I guess we can decide closer to the date.

In some thread that I can't find, search-challenged as I am, you mentioned that you've been making a crispy chocolate cookie that you like, from la Martha's new cookie book.  Which one is it?  The book arrived last night, and I thought I'd spend some time in the kitchen this weekend.

They're the Giant Chocolate Sugar Cookies (ran up to get the title but didn't note the page number, sorry). They weren't really crispy but they are deelish. Let me know which ones you make and how they turn out. I have a feeling we'll be baking from this book this weekend too.

Thanks.  She has a video, available at the library, that's a collection of clips from her shows wherein she makes many of the cookies in the book.  I've been watching it in the morning as I walk to nowhere on the treadmill.  This morning I watched her make pecan-coconut caramel-filled shortbreads - they looked really good.  They may be a candidate for this weekend's baking adventures.

Mmm, that sounds good. And surely watching food is the best thing to do while exercising? :)

My theory is that calories taken in through the eyes don't settle on the hips...of course, that doesn't translate to calories ingested orally - much to my chagrin!

I'm just teasing! I could watch certain food shows for hours.  But they do make me hungry...

Oh yes - I knew that!  I should have used a smiley.

I'll be starting out at Woodbine and Danforth - I can meet you anywhere between there and Union Station - or meet the crew at the first stop that's transit-accessible.
