Toronto-fest again?

Nightrider's picture

Hey folks,

I've been chatting with Rhea via e-mail, and we've been thinking that it might be time for another fest.  I'd love to meet some of the folks here that I don't know yet.  Anyone else interested?

What's the name/location of your butcher with the good canned tomatoes? TIA.

I'm always looking for an excuse to go to Toronto.....but I'm in NS from the 3rd to the 11th for Dad's 85th. After that I'm pretty free until March break which is the teen week.

Mo

PS I'll be offline while in NS so just make your plans and if I can come, I will.

if past attendees can come, and if the dates work, I'd be up for it. :-)

Long distance forecast! I'll be in (well strictly speaking close to) Toronto at the end of September/beginning of October so if there's anything happening them I'd love to join you.

Ashley, that would be great! I'd definitely like to organize something around you (and Mrs Ashley?). Where will you be?

We're actually going to be in Barrie, (which as any fule kno is just a little ways up Yonge Street), although we've a couple of "loose nights", which means we don't yet have accommodation booked, or even a location in mind, although Jen was muttering something about a train through the foliage.

PS The "any fule kno" comment isn't a personal jibe, it is a quote from Sellar & Yeatman's 1066 and All That, a very funny take on history as it is taught in school. Something which which should be common knowledge (but probably isn't!) is something any fule kno.

Well, I don't think of Barrie as just up Yonge Street, even though I'm geographically challenged, and know that Yonge Street ends in Thunder Bay or somewhere way up there! I think you could see a great deal of fall colour taking a roundabout way home from there, or even coming down the Don Valley Parkway into Toronto.

I assume you've been to Toronto before if you know Yonge Street? When Wolvie was here we went to Susur for a fest and had the tasting menu. It was fantastic. If you need help with any planning, I'm happy to volunteer.

I have been to Toronto before, but it was so long ago it was when they were just starting to build the CN Tower. City's probably changed a bit!

Wow, that was back in the 70s, when I was in England. Yes, things have changed a little :)

I'm not sure about a "train through the foliage", but a car ride/bus tour/boat tour through the Muskoka's or any other area of the near north (which is not so far from Barrie) would definitely be awesome. There are a number of "thousand Island Cruises" that start out at many different points and tour the best of the lakelands areas. I shall rack my brain and see if I can remember some of the most popular/scenic.

The train is the Dream Catcher Express and runs from North Bay – Temagami in the last week or so of September.

Now that one is quite a ways from Barrie. I'll see if I can find some info on the boat cruises that operate up that way, I know that there a at least 2 and probably a lot more in the North Bay area; they vary from 3 hour straight on board to day trips with stop overs at picturesque/historic places, to sunset dinner cruises. You may be able to combine the cruise with the train ride, depending on your schedule.

The fall scenery around the lakes on a beautiful day when the colours are reflected in the water is TDF.

I lived in the Parry sound area for 10 years and never fell out of love with the fall beauty.

I agree completely.  DH's family has a cottage in Huntsville, and we try to go up there as many weekends as possible.  Always gorgeous!

So, should we fest in the near future, hold off until the fall when we can meet Ashley, or just go ahead and do both? :)

Lazio1954's picture

My vote is for both; they are after all over 6 months apart.  I don't think twice a year is excessive...

BTW, where in Huntsville?

On Peninsula Lake (not in the part that's close to Deerhurst though).   It's a pretty quick drive into town or over to the resorts if we feel like getting out of the cottage, but it also feels very private.  Heaven!

I thought I'd bring this up again. Would anyone like to get together in the next month or two?

Nightrider, thanks for the Fresh from the Farm tip. I went and bought three cans of the tomatoes, and some chicken. We loved the tomatoes and will get to the chicken soon. I also picked up some St. John's bakery bread there, saving me another trip. Have you tried it?

I'll come. I'd rather save the big expensive dinner for the fall when Ashley is here rather than do two, but other than that.....

We ate in an amazing Mexican restaurant on the Danforth and it was very reasonable. I'm sure there are lots of those places we can check out.

We are away for March Break starting on the 10th.

It's funny; a friend mentioned an amazing Mexican place on Danforth this week. I'll try to get the name and you can let me know if it's the same spot.

There's a year-old Chinese huge supermarket called T&T in the portlands now. That might be worth a visit if anyone's up for it. It's even better on weekends, with more prepared food available.

Near there, on Broadview, is an organic bakery called St. John's, with delicious breads. And a few minutes north is Nightrider's Mennonite meat and more store, with their yummy canned tomatoes and many other supplies.

If we're thinking the east end, there's also Leslieville, with some good sources, or the Distillery Farmer's Market (don't know how great it will be in March but there's a chocolatier and Brick Bakery).

And what about the new Chinatown in Markham?

We went to a restuarant there years ago and we were the only non Chinese there. The waiter helped us order and we had sooo much food I thought DH would faint when he got the bill. It was for about $40, I think. Everyone there was DRESSED and of course we were in jeans and had three kids.....Always planned to try and find it again but never have. It was the best Chinese I have ever had.

I have seen the mall on TV but never gone. And I think Iread that there is now a huge Chinese grocery somewhere in the West end????????

I haven't been to Markham at all lately. We do go to a Chinese restaurant at McCowan and Finch that is really authentic and good. But it isn't cheap. Plus, it often has huge weddings on Saturday nights, as do a lot of good Chinese restaurants, so we've driven all that way a couple of times to be turned away. You'd think we'd learn to call ahead.

I don't know about the west end Chinese, but T&T is right downtown, just off the Gardiner/Lakeshore.

That would be the West End T&T...?

The original one was in the Promenade, then they opened one in the West end, then one in Mississauga, and now according to Karen one in GTA.

The mall you're thinking of might be the Pacific Mall????
