Southern California--we need to lunch

Jillsifer's picture

I'm feeling the need to gather our SoCal CTers for lunch sometime soon.

I don't care what we eat--I'll even choke down Chinese food if I have to--but I miss you guys. Although we COULD do Vietnamese (yum).

Anyone up for it?

I'd love to come.  I'm traveling from tomorrow (10/22) through next Monday (10/26) but should be available after 10/26.

I can't do anything until after Halloween, but what does everybody think of the first or second week in November?

Also, what do you guys want to eat? Vietnamese?

That should work well for me. I'm open to Vietnamese. I don't think I've ever had it before.

I'm a bit old to remember much of my geography, but I think she's about the same distance I am...if I can do it, she can do it!

Lots of interesting, different flavors. I think you'll like it. What you won't like is the (lack of) parking in Little Saigon but maybe we can all meet at my house and take one or two cars or something like that.

Depending on our numbers, I kind of have a place in mind that captures the "essence" of Little Saigon really well, up to and including the surly waiters and free cafe sua da with your order. It's even got a five-foot golden Buddha standing just inside the door and an impromptu open-air market on the sidewalk.

My SIL lives in Rancho Cucamonga and I will be visiting her 11/9-11/12. If your fest falls within those dates and she has not already made other plans for us, may we come?

Jillsifer's picture

Are you KIDDING? You MUST come! We would all love to meet you.

Are you actually arriving on the 9th, or could we schedule the lunch for that day? (That looks like the easiest day for me to "have a dentist appointment.") I suppose that might also depend on the airport, whether you're arriving at LAX or Ontario . . . ?

Also, I'm assuming you know that Rancho Cucamonga is some distance from Westminster (Little Saigon)--you and your sister might want to plan on a longish drive.

HEYYYYYY, everybody else--does the 9th work?

I arrive at ONT on Sunday, 11/8.

Google Maps says its about 1hr 40 minutes. Does that sound right?

I'll ask my SIL if she's interested if that's the date that is chosen. My guess is that she would enjoy it but I can't say for sure until I ask.

Yes, ish. I'm guessing that from Rancho Cucamonga, you'd take the 10 west to the 57 south to the 22 west and get off at Magnolia, then head south a mile or so. I'd be happy to direct her from there if she needs help.

(The restaurant I'm thinking about is at Magnolia and Bolsa, right at the entrance to Little Saigon proper.)

I'm so looking forward to meeting you!

Okay, let's say it's 11/9 for sure unless we hear objections by . . . Monday, Oct. 26? That will give you and your sister time to touch base, plan whatever you need to plan and so forth. And if MadMom is coming, she'll need to make travel arrangements as well.

How about the rest of you? Is 11/9 okay in Westminster for lunch? Butterscotch? Paretsky? Thann? KCB? Tones? Others? Anyone else flying in to join us? AVAK123?

By the way, if you're interested, Bolsa Avenue is the "heart" of Little Saigon (comparable to Grant Street in San Francisco as the heart of Chinatown). It makes for a nice (if overcrowded) walk with some good photo ops if anyone is interested. There's also some interesting shopping (jade, tea, cool Asian groceries, a good selection of shoes IF you have tiny little feet . . . )

Well, my feet are tiny...IF you think a size 9 is tiny!  Would love the shopping, though, and the photo ops.  I'll check on flights.  What day should I come in?  When should I plan to leave?  Any good recs on hotels?

I'm completely unavailable on the 7th (Surf City Open Band Tournament all day and into the evening) but if you could come on the 8th we could hang out a bit.

I feel so bad that I don't have a guest room . . . but definitely stay in Huntington Beach or even Seal Beach if you can get a good deal there. The prices are likely to be a LOT lower than in Newport Beach and it's closer to all the fun stuff. Bring Cecilia!

Darn, I am so disappointed.  Gosh darned trial set for that day and no possible way to play hookie.  Which spot are you going to?  The place we went for dim sum that one time was closed for remodelling when I was there in February.

Jillsifer's picture

Yes, it's re-opened now but I haven't checked it out.

We are going to Pho 54 at the southwest corner of Magnolia and Bolsa near the ABC Supermarket. (They have three or four restaurants, but we're going to that one.) This one is more traditional Vietnamese with less of a Chinese feel.

Ohhhhhhhh, maaaaaaannnnnnn <whine, whine>, can't you  . . .  I dunno . . . beg to reschedule or something? It's been FOREVER since we saw you . . .

If I come in on the 6th, which is a Friday, arriving about quitting time, could someone pick me up at Orange County?  Anne, could you maybe come over for the weekend, or will you be preparing for the trial?  I could leave on Tuesday morning or Monday afternoon, whichever works out better.  Flights look to be reasonably priced, except the web site is sort of a mess.  Let me know ASAP, also what would be the better time to arrive and to leave.

I'm so sorry--I don't know how I missed this. I will be at Job #2 in Los Alamitos until 4:30ish or 5:ish but will hop to it IMMEDIATELY after and get you at OC.

E-mail me at work if you want--I'm stuck on a conference call until 12:30, and out of the office after that. Or you can call my cell phone as well.

SORRY!

Let's meet at the restaurant at noon, okay?

It's called Pho 54 and it's in a strip mall on the southwest corner of Bolsa and Magnolia in Westminster. (The CITY of Westminster, not Westminster Blvd.). From where you guys will be, I suggest the 10 west to the 57 south to the 22 west, then off at Magnolia. Head south on Magnolia (again, your destination is the CITY of Westminster, but as you're heading south, you will pass Westminster Blvd.--keep going).

The anchor store in that center is called ABC supermarket. I'll e-mail you with my cell phone number just in case.
