SanFranFest - coming?

ashleyd's picture

It looks like quite a few people like the idea of a get-together in San Francisco, so just a preliminary enquiry who thinks they might be able to come for at least one meal with us? Date provisionally Sat 1st October but could be 8th if that is better for most.

As far as I know right now, either date works.

Count on us for 2 as far as we know at this time.  And, I don't know if the date makes any difference.

I'm hoping to be there, and with luck Peter will be able to join us.

I'm getting excited!  samchang, where are you?  Surely you can make a short hop up the coast (yeah, I know it's something like 400 miles, but what's 400 miles among friends?)

What it IS is real cheap and easy on JetBlue to Oakland. Also fun.

I'd prefer Thanksgiving weekend. I think I'm in Miami the weekend before for a Dames meeting. At any rate, we'd love to come.

Just curious, but do we have anyone in San Francisco who would be willing to host this thing and make all the arrangements?

The key thing is knowing where to go, the booking is easy enough by phone and mail.

You need to relax.  It is only March.  However without a resident coordinator, things could be difficult.

A lot of things don't need to be touched until later, but the basics are sometimes easier and cheaper if done in advance, especially those of us who have a fair way to travel to Fests. A resident coordinator is of course useful and volunteers are welcome but as a fallback we have a good friend in SF who is...an event planner.

OK, you convinced me, to at least give you a chance to get there the date looks like being around 8th October.

No decisions on hotels and stuff at this early stage but from the hotels mentioned so far the Andrews looks excellent value but most of their rooms seem to have double beds rather than two singles, so room sharing could be a little more intimate than expected, and the Vintage Court seems to be going through a bad patch. But things may yet change.

What's wrong? We're staying there next week--have you heard or read something I should know? Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh . . . please advise!

See tripadvisor. You may want to revise your booking - the Andrews or the Mosser look to be better deals at the moment.

I'm not tripadvisor but friends stayed there recently after it was sold and were disappointed.

A couple of former coworkers have offered to check it out for me--should have a definite answer by this weekend.

Wonder if Masa's is still the same? Won't be able to go there on this trip--we're "on the cheap" this time . . . but would still like to know.

My friends that stayed at the Vintage Court had an extraordinary meal there when Ron Seigel was at the helm. The next time, he'd left and neither was as good. Masa's service was terrible and the hotel was a bit "tired" in their words.

I'm in the area and should be able to come to an event, no matter the date.

Another new face, how excellent! Sometime later in the year there will be time to consider details like who needs accomodation in what kind of hotel and where we should eat but at this stage (as ever) it looks like it will be a fun gathering.

If you don't come I'll file a complaint at the legislature, which could hold up imports of water and electricity to California.

Well I can't be responsible for that--I'll have to come. Where would we be without all the imported utilities?

I'm glad you are planning to come.  I think the W runs specials occasionally, and there's a new hotel across from Ferry Plaza that looks great.  The Argent, I think.  ??  That would be a dynamite location to stay and it looks very attractive.   All very Glenys-like.  ; )

The style may be Glenys but the prices probably aren't, $200+/night. The choice is basically going to be between funky at a reasonable rate (the Mosser or Andrews look the kind of style) or something through Priceline, corporate but cheap. Bear in mind that there will be quite a lot of room sharing so two beds are a pre-requisite and the target price, which we have achieved fairly well in the past, is $100-120/room/night (or better). When you look at the cost of a going to a Fest (apart from lucky locals), airfare + hotel + meals + shopping mean that the hotel price can mean the difference between making it affordable and waiting till the next time.

I love the W (love exercising my Starwood Resort card) but we really liked the Argonaut. It's a Kimpton. We walked along from the hotel to the Ferry Terminal market. It's a hike but it's all flat and a great walk.

Kimpton's are great.  I always stay in one of their hotels when I'm in Chicago.  They do a nice job!

Did you get a good rate at the Argonaut? Looking at the web site it looks like another $200+ place (pre-discount of course)
