The REAL Truth about the SoCal Fest (post #56894)

Well, everyone was absolutely delightful.  Of course, I knew the ones I had met before would be.  Kitchen Witch, Jillsifer, CookiMonster, Paretsky (and of course Buddy, Natty, and Gillen and Ida Mae,who came later) were all old friends whom I enjoyoed seeing again.  The new people, avak123, better known as Amy, and Tones, better known as Tony, and Calimari (I believe that is going to be her stage name), better known as "Jill's friend Mary" were all such fun.  First, because everyone is asking, I'm going to post some pictures from lunch.  As I said, Gillen and Ida Mae came later, so they weren't in the pictures, but we did get the group.  If I remember correctly, the first two pictures were of the left side of the table and show (L-R) Kitchen Witch, holding Buddy, MadMom (isn't she lovely?), Jillsifer, and avak123.  The third picture is the right side of the table (we took two shots, but the first one was horribly blurred) showing (L-R) Paretsky, Tones, Mary, CookiMonster, and Natalie.  Friday's lunch was at a lovely Persian place, so we didn't have to play the normal CT game of "taste this" and passing plates around (we saved that for Saturday's dinner.)  I can't begin to tell you what all we ate, but it was all delicious and the service was excellent.  We were afraid they were going to close the place down around us, but they were very nice and let us stay long after they cleared the buffet away and were setting up for dinner.

Those of us who were staying at the hotel went back there Friday night.  No, avak123 didn't direct me to the wrong hotel THIS TIME, although she was very specific when I talked to her Thursday night after I landed.  "Be sure you tell the cabbie to take you to the Hyatt Regency at Irvine, not the one at Newport Beach."  Naturally, being such a shy demure genteel lady, I listened to her.  Went there, paid the cabbie, and went inside, only to find I had reservations at the Hyatt Regency at Newport Beach, which was a six mile cab ride away.  Fortunately, when I arrived (about 11 pm NC time) I found that CookiMonster was already there, and avak123 had sent a wonderful sussie of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries.  I did my best to kill the bottle of champagne, because Jennifer said that it would go flat if left overnight.  What can I say?  I had to take one for the team.  Anyway, Amy, all is forgiven once I realized you at least sent the champagne to the right hotel.

Friday night saw KitchenWitch, Jillsifer, CookiMonster, and I (well, okay, KW and I) drink two bottles of wine, and we all managed to eat lots and lots of cheese, crackers, tomatoes, pate, strawberries, chocolates, and heaven only knows what else.  I did take one picture of the view from the room.

Saturday morning, we ate breakfast at Las Brisas.  Oh yes, forgot to mention that RuthAnn and Jennifer shared a room, while I shared a room with Buzz, as in Buzz Saw.  I kept piling pillows on top of my head until I was sleeping on one and had four over my head, but the noise was still deafening.  Ended up dragging everything off my bed and padding into the next room and sleeping on the floor.  Whatever you do, never ever ever volunteer to spend a night in the same room with Jillsifer, otherwise known as Buzz Saw.  Unless you are totally deaf.  Then the vibrations might keep you awake.  Jill, I do love you, but have to warn my many CT friends!

Breakfast at Las Brisas was served buffet style (we do love buffets!) and it was excellent.  We ate outside on the hillside terrace, and the view was to die for.  Took a picture of the view of the Pacific Ocean, and Jillsifer took a picture of MadMom while Kitchen Witch and CookiMonster were down playing at oceanside and gathering shells.

Saturday, we did some shopping.  Jillsifer took us to a really neat place where we bought some surf shirts and board shorts for our various children and grandchildren.  No one was the least bit hungry for lunch, so we went back to the hotel and gossiped and ate leftover goodies.  Meanwhile, Pomona had arrived, so we introduced her to the leftovers and told her she could hot bunk with KW, who was going home that night.  CookiMonster had a horrible headache, evidently a part of her CFS, so when it came time for KitchenWitch to go home and relieve her DH (who kept the witchlets so she could have some girl time Friday night), Jillsifer, Pomona, and I went to Ikea.  Poor Jillsifer stayed in the car and drove approximately 153 miles around the parking lot while Pomona and I went in to pick up a kitchen cabinet catalog for my DD.  I understand the marketing strategy behind it, but why does Ikea make it impossible to get from point A to point B without going through the entire damn store?  (Pardon the slight rant.)

Anyway, avak123 had called and guess she decided to bow out on dinner, but Mary was still coming, so the three of us headed up PCH to meet her at a lovely Indian place.  Jillsifer, Pomona, and I were at the table when Mary came in.  She said she was meeting some women and the waiter replied "They're in the corner."  How fitting!  We had lovely appetizers, samosas and some vegetable fritters, and shared them (of course.)  Then we ordered dinner.  For entrees, Jillsifer and Mary ordered the Chicken Tikki Masala, Pomona had an eggplant dish (forgotten the name of it), and I had Vegetable Korma.  We also ordered rice with cumin and saffron and a selection of breads.  Everything was wonderful, and we introduced Mary to the CT habit of passing dishes around so everyone could have a taste of everything.  Pomona had some wine (the sot...remind me to rebuke her sins) but I think the rest of us settled for iced tea or water.  I should have taken pictures; Jill and I both had our cameras, but I think we both were too busy eating and yakking to remember them.  I even managed to save myself in the nick of time from major embarrassment.  When the entrees were brought out, mine looked like it had tinfoil on top.  I was that close to saying something when someone remarked "ohhh, it's edible silver."  Well, of course, it was!

No way we could finish everything, so we boxed up all the leftovers and took them back to the hotel for Jennifer, who fortunately was over her headache by this time and finished them off handily.

Despite many protests and Jennifer insisting that she could sleep through anything, Buzz...err...I mean Jillsifer, went back home to grab some sleep.  Said she would be back in the morning to pick us up and head for LAX with Jennifer then to SNA with me.  My legs and back were killing me after the trip to Ikea, so went to bed early.  Have no idea how late the rest of them stayed up!

Sunday was a quick goodby to Pomona, who was staying at the hotel and hoping to catch an earlier, more direct, flight back home, then Jillsifer, CookiMonster, and I headed for LAX.  She had to be there at something like 8 a.m. for her Air Canada flight, and although we got her there on time, police were everywhere.  They had cars, drug sniffing dogs, and long long lines.  Don't know what the big alert was for, but hope she made her flight!

Jillsifer and I had breakfast on the way back, because I didn't need to be at Orange County airport (I refuse to call it John Wayne, just like National airport will remain National) until about 11.  We went over past Huntington Harbor and stopped at a neat little cafe whose name escapes my senile brain.  Anyway, the food was good, the company was wonderful, and it was a nice end to a lovely weekend.

Next time, we expect to see the same crowd, which now includes Tones, avak123, and Mary, and even more!

Does she have sleep apnea? http://www.helpguide.org/life/sleep_apnea.htm

I don't think so.  My DSIL had bad sleep apnea, and to be honest, he snored much worse than Jillsifer.  He would also have the non-breathing periods with no noise at all.  That she didn't have, LOL.

Seriously, we kid her about it, but my DH snores, and after 45 years, when he starts, I just head for the guest room.  Sometimes flight is the better part of valor.

DH snored so loudly that we have had seperate bedrooms for years. Diagnosed sleep apnea in the early '90s. I find the noise of the CPAP machine keeps me awake as much as the snoring ever did! :)

You can get a silent C-Pap machine if you get the more expensive version......Dh uses it. When he was diagnosed they were shocked that we sleep in the same bed. You can learn to tune out anything......

My sophomore year of college I had three roommates, all of whom snored so loudly that I spent the entire year sleeping on the love seat in our suite's living area. A very uncomfortable way to spend the night, I assure you.

I kidded Jillsifer about it, and she was horribly embarrassed.  My feeling is that no one can help it; I cannot imagine anyone doing it on purpose.  I still love her to death, but will never share a room with her again, LOL.

I snore (apparently!) when positioned on my back and I don't have sleep apnea, but I do have some sinus issues. SO just gently nudges me onto my side - which is more comfortable sleep anyway.

I believe I mentioned those...(g) I still have a slightly disturbing mental picture from that event...

Statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception.

Looking back on it, it's funny.  Of course, at the time I was dragging my ancient tired body to a hotel only to find out that "You don't have a reservation here" it wasn't that hilarious...until I got to the second hotel and found the champagne.  Jennifer listened to my sad story and said "I have something which will make you feel lots better."  It did!  Thanks again.

locals refer to the Newport Beach hotel as "The Newporter" it became a Hyatt Regency rather recently. Makes it easier not to get them mixed up for folks from out of town. Glad your visit was a nice one.

The hotel was quite lovely.  I know that avak123 referred to the Newporter, blissfully unaware (as was I) that both of the hotels are on the same street...just six miles apart!  It really was funny, particularly the look on my face when I found out I did not have reservations at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine!

MM, have you lost weight since the last time I saw you?  No, I'm NOT being cute - seriously, you look thinner.

Thanks everyone!  I had lost about eight pounds before this weekend, but was also working out daily, so I think that helped.  Of course, for some reason I seemed to have gained a few back over the weekend...could they have been lying to me when they told me that wine and champagne had no calories????

Did manage to only eat about half of my hefty (that was sarcasm!) airplane meal on the last leg coming home, mostly due to the man sitting across me who had terminal post nasal drip and spent most of the eating time sniffing, blowing his nose, and other assorted appetite killing activities.

We've had houseguests for the past couple of days, so I haven't had much online time, but it was great seeing everybody - both those I'd met before and those I hadn't.
I didn't have nearly enough time to talk to everyone as I wanted to, but hopefully we'll see each other again. I was busy having fun with the witchlets, who obliged me by standing in for my guys.

Not your best, but it was the only one I had!  You need to get in more pictures.  It was so good to see you again and to meet the new people (at least, new to me!)  KitchenWitch needs to put a brick on Buddy's and Natalie's heads - they are growing up way too fast!  Good to see IdaMae (for those not in the know, that's Jillsifer's mom, who looks about 20 years younger than I) and Gillen, who is as sweet and polite as ever.  Jillsifer, don't know how you do it, but if you ever need a new job, I could recommend you for the Super Nanny!
