Meaniefest II headcount

MEANCHEF's picture

It is time to start counting how many of you will definitely attend MF II in October.

I am going to begin doing my  search for good eats places again. I will strive to not repeat anything we did last year.

It will be on the weekend of Oct 5-6.  I will definitely make arrangements for those two days.  But will also arrange for the 4th and 7th, depending on how many people will be here then.

Mean - You would have to go some to exceed the tasting menu we had last year.  That was unbelievable, and although I never never never spend that much on a meal, it was worth every penny.  Have we ever decided on a hotel?  I keep hoping that the Elliott Grand Hyatt will have something reasonable again, even if it isn't as cheap as last year, that was such a great hotel, centrally located, and the food at 727 was TDF.  After all of that blather, just want to say I'm definitely planning on being there...will probably plan on coming in on Thursday or Friday and leaving on Monday, if that fits in with everyone else's schedule.

I have every intention of being there, as long as I don't have any pregnancy complications. My OB already gave me clearance, again, as long as everything is proceeding okay.

I will need to bunk with someone (MM, jill, Tracy) who will have to handle making the hotel reservation, since if it's in my name, and something happen, my roomie(s) would be SOL.

I plan to fly in Friday, Sat, Sun, leave Monday.

If the Elliot doesn't appear at Priceline, how is the Westin DT? Isn't it just a block and a half from the Elliot? While I'd love another deal like the Elliot's $40 a night, I'm willing to spend $50-75 a night (my half)

I wouldn't mind repeating a tasting dinner at 727.

RA - I'll be happy to bunk with you, or Jill, or Tracy...if you want, we can try to get three in a room, just in case you end up with complications.  How does that sound?  Just let me know.  I will be coming in on Thursday or Friday, depending on what the rest of the group does, and probably leave on Monday morning.

Where's the Canadian contingent?  Please let me know if anyone wants me to reserve a room for them if we decide to go the Priceline route.  I'll need to have full names and arrival/departure dates.  You can email me.

So far, I'm bunking with CM.  Assibams - I'm CERTAIN that between me, CM, Madmom, Jillsifer, KitchenWitch and Tracy you will have a roommate.

$80 a night is too much for me, BTW.  I would really love to get a deal like last year.  Not necessarily the same hotel (although that would be incredible!) but just a price similar to that.  I really need to go NO HIGHER than $60 a night as my share.

Oh, and MM?  Put me on your list to reserve a room for, and I'll send you the money right away.  I just know if you find a deal you need to grab it right away, so get me and CM one too and we'll pay you for it.

It would be perfect if we could stay downtown again, no matter where.  I loved walking in Seattle and being able to just hike down to the Market and to all those great restaurants.  I'm getting back to that Tea shop again this year.

Just out of curiosity, I tried $75/nt for a 4* hotel in downtown...but didn't get it.  I can always try a bit higher, but it would be nice to know what everyone's limit is.

My limit -- and I'd love to bunk with someone -- is $70 per night. I'll be arriving sometime Friday and will leave Sunday as late as possible.

MM, the priceline inventory changes constantly, and it does seem a little early to up the bidding.  Do you check the biddingfortravelsite?  They post recent priceline accepted and rejected bids as well as give you live-time bidding strategies (but you are required to do your homework and check and report hotel website prices for your days)

I just got a $50 Westin 4* in LA for this week.  I had previously bid up to $55 and did not get it, but I waited 72 hours and rebid and got it.

Edited to say:  The Seattle hotels are really high now $80-90 on priceline vs 50 in parts of LA and SF, but couldn't find any accepted bids for Oct in Seattle yet).  It is possible to bide your time and wait for a lower rate.  This can be done if you reserve a refundable back-up that you are willing to pay, perhaps a lower rated hotel.  Then you have lots of time to wait for that 4* bargain nearer to the date.  I highly recommend that you read biddinfortravel.com's FAQ about bidding for priceline hotels.  Also for those who want a better bargain there are 3*'s in the $40 range getting accepted, again, nothing posted for the specific meaniefest dates.

Yes, of course I read Bidding for Travel, and someone did mention getting the Hyatt for $96, which I thought was a great deal (although it was for a reservation in August.)  That was one of the reasons I upped my bid...just to see what would happen.  Last year, we booked in June for our October stay, and it's July now, so don't think it's too early.  I know that I tried to get rooms for people later, and they were up to $125, which is still good, but there's no guarantee of which 4* hotel you're going to get...I was obviously hoping to get the Hyatt, but got the Westin.  I've checked out the Westin's web site, and it looks like a nice hotel...not as new as the Hyatt or Marriott, but a lot of amenities, and, as Mean said, a great location!

I hate to be responsible for booking everybody's rooms...you people in the US should go ahead and jump onto Priceline if that is what you want to do.  I don't mind booking rooms for people from outside the US (Assibams and my Canadian friends) since they have a problem with Priceline.  If people want to wait until later, it's always possible they could get a better deal.  It's always a gamble with Priceline, and you never know if the prices are going to go up or down.

It isn't that I don't want to book your room...I just thought it would be easier for people in the US to book their own.  That way, there's no mistakes.

Okay - I may have just screwed myself, but for whatever it's worth, I upped my bid on a 4* hotel in downtown Seattle and got the Westin for $90/nt, arriving on Friday and leaving on Monday.  That's on Priceline, in case anyone else is interested in trying.  Mean, is this a decent hotel?  Does anyone else want to try it?  You might try a bit lower, but $75 wasn't accepted, so it would have to be between $80-$90, I would think.  I hope this isn't too far away, but that's what I got, so I have to be happy with it.

The location is great.

I'll stay with you at the Westin - I read the reviews - It's no Elliot Grand Hyatt, but sounds fine. It's only a few blocks from Pikes, as well. And $90 a night works out to $45 a piece. I can handle that.

The Westin sounds good enough for me. I'd rather spend my budget on food and souvenirs than on a room.

I do have a US Visa, but since I have never used it it has never been activated through the 800 number, so I might have to use my German credit card.

MM, if you can bid for P & me, that would be great. I know P would prefer the Hyatt, but I'd rather bunk down on the cheap, and save my paltry $$$ for the market.

BTW - yes, we are definitely on for MFII - I just have to check my vacation schedule at work for the dates I've booked off - hence the delay in responding.  So far the plan is that we'll drive in on Friday and leave Monday. Looking forward to being slightly more alert and with-it this October than last!

Sandra, will be happy to get a room for my two favorite Vancouverites!  (and any other of my favorite Vancouverites who need help.)  Also, Assibams, do you want me to book a room for you?  I don't think Priceline takes anything other than US cards.  If you do, email me your dates, full name, etc.  Anyone else?  I realize this isn't as posh as the Hyatt, and it's twice as much as we paid last year, but it is over $200 less for a three day stay than similar hotels, and I also would rather spend my money on goodies than on a bed.  Heck, I stayed at the Sylvia once!

Hoo boy!  Waited the obligatory three days, and tried booking a room for you and P.  My $90 bid wasn't accepted!  They say that if I want to up it by $22, I can bid again, but according to BiddingForTravel, they will usually take about half of that (or, in this case, $100/nt.)  Any suggestions?  HELP!

Hi MM - I dunno - go ahead and try $100, I think - that's still relatively cheap.

This is why I hate to spend other people's money.  I went back in, bid $100, and got it...at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel and Tower!  It was so much easier last year when the Hyatt was the only game in town at that price.  I'm so sorry.  This is turning into a nightmare.

Well, the Sheraton sounds like a nice place to spend money! Honestly - we'll live with whatever we end up with (though there's no denying that it would be nice if all CTers were in the same hotel). The important part is the people and food stuff.

I would very much appreciate your booking a room for me! $100 per night is okay with me as long as I can get someone to share that room with me. I promise, I do not snore! I tried to find a way to book a hotel from here (through the German Automobile Club), but the cheapest they had to offer was $125 for a downtown 4-star hotel. Since I will arrive so late in Seattle on Thursday (2nd) I believe I will stay at any airport hotel for the remaining night - the flight is scheduled to arrive around midnight, add baggage claim and cab downtown and it would be 2 am before I could check in. So I'll need the downtown room Friday, check-out Monday.

Oh boy, that probably means we will end up with a questionable reputation in every single downtown hotel? Does that mean we will have to change location for next year's Meaniefest?

Edited to add a thank you for your efforts in getting us foreigners to the fest!
