which wine to serve with tetra pack "pacifica" / "trader joes" organic soups

georgia strait's picture

i know that some will probably wonder why I'm using hi-sodium tetra pak soup -- but here's the deal -- it's a sunset hour bird-watching fundraiser event at my cottage and i have limited cooking facility including fridge and stove -- so this soup is easy to heat and serve in evening.

I plan to use probably the tomato soup which is creamy and offer also some of those purchased bread stix (flakey pastry) and we hope to have a campfire too (roast / bbq sausages and buns).

this is an outdoor event -- hiking shoes and polartec are what one wears

nb - we are in the Pac NW and I need to serve local wine, which are usual varietal tho there are some blends avail.

can you please tell me which white and which red you would offer -- maybe a local microbrew would be better but wine seems more popular in our region.  If it's a blend - is it dry or medium?

I must stay w/in a limited budget -- remember it's a fundraiser

Thank you in advance for your wine and menu suggestions.

Someone from your area will (post #69386, reply #1 of 2)

Someone from your area will have to give you those very specific answers, but Columbia Crest wines Two Vine label, are VERY reliable wines, and very moderate in price and quite nice. The Reserve label is more expensive and very good also. Their cabernet won wine of the year honors last year.

Other than supporting local commerce is there another reason for needing to have wines from there?

I'd serve a chardonnay and a shiraz.  I would also have looked for a good box wine like the Black Box from Napa for good wine at a good price.

I also might add it is pretty easy to make soup and put it in containers to take to your cabin and heat--about as easy as opening a box of TJ's.

I've heard that sparkling (post #69386, reply #2 of 2)

I've heard that sparkling wine goes well with soup-- that would also make for a more festive fundraiser.  If you are getting the soup at TJ's, check their wine selection too-- they have a very good selection for quite reasonable prices.  Just find a staff member and pose your question-- they will probably be able to point you in the right direction.  Good luck and happy birding.

P.S. What kind of sausages?  A good semi-dry Riesling would be great with just about any sausage-- even hot dogs!
