Pulled pork -- what was I waiting for?!

RuthWells's picture

So the butcher at the farmer's market near my hairdresser had pork butt this weekend. Pork butt! That's what's used for the famous pulled pork, right? Into the bag it goes, and Hubby was very accomodating about my coming home with a huge hunk-o-meat for him to took. I spelunked around CT and we ended up using Mean Chef's spice rub and molasses-based BBQ sauce for serving. Man oh man, that is good stuff. I ate much too much of it, and there are scads of leftovers. We'll be having pork sandwiches at the back to school picnic this week. Where has this been all my life?!

Oh honey, if Mom hadn't kept us separated for so long, you would have eaten it as a mere babe. ;-)

I'm so happy you finally found the light.  Now you need to come down here and we'll treat you to a pulled pork extravaganza!

I must have been chanelling both you AND Wolvie this weekend -- lunch yesterday was a BLT with fried green tomatoes as the T. Delicious!

Am I right that the crispy, chewy, outer part of the pork butt is the most delectable, and worth pushing Hubby and kids out of the way for?.........

Oh yes, especially the crispy fatty bits.  Yum.  In our family, it's puller's rights for those bits, but there are usually enough to share.  Usually.

You sure are right.  We're having some friends over for a pulled pork dinner on Wednesday.  I roasted the pork from 6 a.m. and DH just finished pulling it -- it practically jumped into shreds.  I "supervised" and we both kept dipping in to grab parts with the dark outer parts.  This stuff is heavenly.  We'll serve it with coleslaw and baked beans and buns.  Perhaps a brewski or two.  Frozen lemon mousse for dessert.

When I came up for air, the first words out of my mouth to Michael were that this would be great to serve for a large group. To which he replied, it's probably not *quite* the right thing to serve at our Hanukah party..... ; )

I used MeanChef's, but we MadMommed a bit .... I'll go spelunking and get back to you.

The search function isn't working for me, but you can grab it here:

http://recipecircus.com/recipes/MEANCHEF/Pork/Pulled_Pork.html

For the rub, I was a bit short on black pepper, and I used half hot paprika and half reg, and thus skipped the cayenne.

We were out of white wine, so we used red for the bbq sauce. Oh, and we subbed dried apricots for dates.

The Kroger near here has it on sale, but I was not sure if I wanted to buy that much.  I think I will pick it up on my way home and make some pulled pork and cut up some to make some sausage

Umm - yes -- I take it from your reaction that that's expensive? It was from a local butcher at a farmer's market, and I'm pretty sure it was organic......

Well, under those circumstances, not too bad.

Around here, it's often for sale for $.99/pound, which is when I buy it.  But that's not local, organic pork butt.

The question is: was it worth it to you?  If so, then there's nothing to be ashamed about.  (For the record, I think it would be worth it to me.)

Leigh

P.S. I think pork butt is generally more available down here, so the price is going to be lower.  Heck, you can buy it by the case at Sam's during deer season, since so many people grind it with the venison for burgers and sausage!

I frequent a German meat market that processes a large amount of "hunter's bounty." The butcher always makes me laugh during hunting season, when he talks about the hunters who bring in their deer for the market to turn it into venison sausage mixed with pork. The number one request of the hunter is that the sausage (made with their freshly caught bambi) not taste like venison. Go figure! LOL

If it will make you feel any better it has been a bit more expensive for some reason for the past 6 months--$1.99 and $1/59.
