DH and I enjoy "The New German Cookbook" by Jean Anderson and Hedy Wurz. One of my favorite recipies from it follows:

c Bavarian Sausage Hotpot

c 1 lb cabbage, sliced 1/2 inch thick
c 2 carrots, sliced 1/4 inch thick
c 6 oz green beans, snapped into 1 inch lengths
c 1 lb potatoes, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
c 2 cups fresh or frozen green peas
c 3 cups beef broth
c 1/2 tsp salt
c 1/8 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
c 1 tsp caraway seeds
c 1 tsp marjoram
c 3/4 lb knockwurst or kielbasa, sliced 1/4 inch thick
c 2 Tbsp chopped parsley

Place cabbage, carrots, beans, potatoes, peas, broth, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in large heavy kettle and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, cover and cook for 20 minutes. Add caraway, marjoram, and sausage, and toss lightly to mix. Re-cover and simmer 10 minutes. Add parsley, toss lightly, and serve in soup plates with crusty chunks of bread.

This can, of course, be multiplied, and ingredients can vary depending on what you have on hand. It holds well, except that the potatoes get a bit mushy. Have fun, and have a stein for me!

Dear Mean Chef,
I really appreciated your tip bout Dogpile. What a fabulous fine. I'm new to computers, but am enjoying the Web. I found some great German recipes, which added to the ones I had, made a great dinner. We had grosse steins. One was definitely for you. Thanks, La. Betty
