I don't know where "out here" (post #70511, reply #1 of 6)

I don't know where "out here" is, but I also can't find canned candied "yams". Canned sweet potatoes, butter and brown sugar will make candied sweet potatoes/yams.

It could be because sweet potatoes and yams are two totally different things.

I misread the original post (post #70511, reply #4 of 6)

I misread the original post as wanting "canned candied yams".  Yes, look for candied sweet potatoes recipes. Yams are NOT sold (with ANY regularity) in this courntry. They are ALL sweet potatoes.  You can find all the sweet potato recipes you would ever want.

I would seriously doubt that real yams would EVER be served "candied">

Yeah, they are not the same (post #70511, reply #5 of 6)

Yeah, they are not the same thing. Yams are long, brown and waxy outside, white inside. Sweet potatoes are often erroneously called yams, I think there was a reference to that in a recent FC.

Yams vs. Sweet Potatoes (post #70511, reply #6 of 6)

That’s right. This link about sweet potatoes and a quote from the page might help clarify things a bit: “True yams are starchy and dry with a white flesh and thick dark skin and are not available in most grocery stores.” Butternut squash is offered up as an acceptable substitute when you don’t have sweet potatoes. I often see sweet potatoes labeled as yams in my grocery store, but I know it's too good to be true.
