Call for Recipe Testers

Gretchen's picture

An introduction might be nice. Like Hi folks. You all look like a nice group of people. This is who I am.

Before I would test, I'd like an example of what kinds of recipes you are going to be trying to sell in your cookbook. They might not meet my standards.

Your site doesn't seem to have any recipes on it--I didn't look too far. AND from Vancouver are you?  That could be interesting.

Angela, what else can you do with the frangipane??  Haven't I seen it on the bottom of some tarts???

Hi Chiqui, yes, frangipane is often used in a traditional French-style fruit tart -- you bake it onto the crust (blind baking) before filling with pastry cream and fruit.  I made one many moons ago.......

I am clicking and clicking and I am not finding any recipes on your site. Can you point me to a few, or to the URL where they're located? Thanks,
Karen

I think you have to "sign-up" for a newsletter of some kind.  I don't see recipes either.

She has no comments on any of her blog entries. And there is nothing but spam - porno and prescription drug links - on her "guestbook".

And her "testimonial" for cookbook expertise is from a Virginia down home cookbook author whose book is also miraculously available for purchase!!

Something didn't smell right.

I was kind of waiting for Glenys to come along. Surely any such well known soon-to-be-published Vancouverite "epicurean foodie" would be known to her!

;)

I was trying to sort of tiptoe around in case she was legit.  Well, she's sort of "legit" but what a way to intrude!!  It IS funny she is in Vancouver!!

Sally, we were invited to be "home recipe testers" by a self promoting "chef"/cookbook author without so much as a "bye your leave".  It was sort of bestowed upon us as if "oh, gee polly, we can't wait to have you "let" us try your wonderful recipe.  Her website is totally uninformative. No recipes on her site.

It was just so exciting to imagine being a recipe tester, and because this site is what it is, my first thought was that it would be high-end stuff. Live and learn.

Always take a good look at what you're about to eat. It's not so important to know what it is, but it's critical to know what it was.

Sorry, but I got your link too late to sign up.  I was busy sending money to a Nigerian lawyer who said someone wants to smuggle $39,000,000 out of the country and needs my help.  I'm so excited, because I get half.

I know!  I can hardly wait.  I also won the lottery in Kenya, I think...that will bring me in several more millions, but I have to find the money to pay the taxes in advance.  But hey, what's a few thousand when I'm going to be a multi gazillionaire?

How much you want to bet that her second husband is a website designer? Also, what peeved me off was the title 'Epicurean' after her name. Is that to be interpreted by the hoi polloi as something like Ph.Foodie? Presumptuous and off-putting. There are some recipes there, nothing grand, nothing we all haven't seen the likes of time and time and time (and time) again.

Oh, I think there is a lot of fodder there!!  I think she thought we would absolutely fall all over ourselves to do it--as we WOULD if FC or anyone here asked!!  Her "people" skills could use a bit of tweaking.  As in "Hi, I'm ___."

Just proves once again, you only get one chance to make a first impression.

I think her husband is in construction. There were odd mentions and links to a construction company that seemed un connected to her illustrious epicurean-ness.

being a recipe tester is not all that exciting (terribly 'un' actually, from personal experience). I had a go back in 1999 when I tested many recipes for a book that, if any of you are into Greek cooking, probably know, and may even have, from a very reputable Greek-American author. Well, beyond the fact that I was given a pittance for each recipe tested (literally, I think it was only a couple of dollars, but I was thrilled to be testing recipes for such a
reknowned author and let that slide), and she never ended up reimbursing me for cost of ingredients - I did my own shopping - for the second huge batch of recipes I tested, I had to give up the 'job' when she faxed me 24! trahana recipes to try (the book was actually quite anthropological in its approach - she went from village to village all over Greece and so gathered a lot of similar recipes, that still needed to be tested individually). I had to quit. I had just found out I was pregnant with Dimitri, and having to try 24 trahana recipes in the course of a week or so proved more than my stomach could handle.LOL

Angela,

In general, this isn't the best place to find testers for recipes using soft margerine. We are more of an unsalted butter kind of crowd, if you know what I mean.

Best of luck with your cookbook.
