Silpat vs. parchment...

soupereasy's picture

OK, made some Ginger Crackles today. Made 2 trays with the silpat and one with parchment.

I preferred the look and texture of those baked on parchment.
We all know I love parchment, I bought the Silpat to save money as in reusable!!:/

Of course not, but for all the wrong reasons!

I bought 2 silpats when they were all the rage.  I used them several times, but decided that I like parchment better.

I use both parchment and Silpat depending on what I'm making.  I do love the silpat, when making fruit pies I always put the pie on a baking sheet with the silpat on, spilt juices are gone with just a wipe.

I have never noticed a difference with my cookies.

I use my silpat to knead or roll out dough.

I never would have thought to use it for that.

Thanks to you and Sally

The thing I use my Silpat the most is kneading (folding) bread dough on top of it.

does not stick, and I don't even get tempted to add more flour to the dough

That's my only use for it at this time. I use parchment for everything else.

Keep trying to get DH to get me a large cheap quantity.  He doesn't seem to understand that I have paid the price over many times buying the rolls. (Even with coups.) And then I need, surprise, more parchment.

Then today we went to get our hair cut, he pointed out socks and a really cute Lands End jacket to me. You gotta love them!;)

Edit to correct spelling. That sentence is still not right!:0

I hate the rolls.  First, you always have to cut them, while if you buy a box of half sheets, you can usually use them as is, cutting them occasionally for small pans.  Plus, a box of 1000 sheets is maybe the price of 5 or 10 rolls...go for it!

You didn't mention the fact, that as you near the end of the roll, the bugger rolls up on you as you lay it out on the pan!

Amen!  You don't even need to be that near the end...in my long ago experience, they always rolled up!  Tell your DH I said to buy you a package of the sheets.

I use the rolls, but I already have a box of foil sheets on my counter and not enough counter space as it is. Someday I'll break down and get the parchment sheets, but fortunately I don't do that much baking.

M'dear, sometimes things just don't come out right, but I know perfectly well what you meant. You have to spend money to save money -- my DH understands the concept, but he doesn't necessarily approve. I sometimes spend far too much money with my economizing. <G>

Don't tell anyone, but I keep my box under my bed.

I won't tell a soul. ;) We have lots of stairs, or I might consider that a solution to some kitchen storage problems, however. Not a bad idea. A tip? LOL

Mine is on the floor under the hutch in the dining room.

Only parchment for me. I tossed my silpat out. I hated it.

soupereasy's picture

Took me this long to buy one and now nobody likes them. Sheesh.
I do love my parchment.  Though I will not toss the silpat, I know I can find uses for it. DH keeps reminding me of the fricos I promised him. :)
Now all I need to do is get a goodly supply of parchment. Buying it by the roll is quite expensive, even with the clipped coupons.

Definitely forget the rolls.  Look nearby for a restaurant supply store, and if that fails, look online.

Seriously -- best thing in the world for making toffee and other candies. :)

We are all in the same boat, you and me and ex-Gov. Palin and Rep. Joe Wilson, and wealth and social status do not prevail against disease and injury. And now we must reform our health insurance system so that it reflects our common humanity. It is not decent that people avoid seeking help for want of insurance. It is not decent that people go broke trying to get well. You know it and I know it. Time to fix it.
