Show Us Your Cakes! (post #64745)

in

Wanna post photos of some of your best creations? With all the talent here, it would be nice to be able to have an all-occassion cake "scrapbook" to peruse for ideas. Easier to view than hunting through old threads since there is no 'image' search here (unless i am missing something).

I'll start. My recent R2D2 cake and molten planet cake for my son's 7th birthday this week.
also, an older pic of the cake i made my ex (then husband) for his first birthday since the birth of our son. I was still nursing then, which is the joke behind the concept. It's not x-rated, but be warned that there is chest-oidal imagery :-)

(lol)  I love the "chestoidal" cake!

Before I head off to get the Boys and take them to the pool to cool off, here are a few of mine that I have stored in the computer:

I'm impressed with everyone's efforts.  It's a good idea to get them all together, so those of us who are less talented can drool, LOL.

Here are a few of mine. I've posted most if not all of them before, so they may look familiar.

I can't bake or decorate.  I did try to find the pic of my mother's birthday cake I made for her using the recipe from RLB's Cake Bible, which is probably the only thing I ever made which was halfway decent, but it is lost in the ether somewhere.  At least I can resize - one of your pictures was huge.  Here is is:

Ruth, Tracy and CookieMonster- your cakes are legend around here (and elsewhere i'm sure) and i am so happy to finally see so many of them. Absolutely gorgeous work.
And Plantlust- what a brilliant cake! I loove the sugar wings.

I really hope that others won't be too intimidated to post because they might not have as many or as fancy cakes. My slumpy R2D2 is pretty flawed, but it still had the impact of "i can't believe you tried that!" that made it worth doing. Cake/frosting/fondant is a tricky medium to work with and the point for us non-professionals is simply to delight our friends and relatives. So please post 'em if you got 'em.

Don't poopoo your cakes.  The R2D2 looked great & the lace on the chest-oidel cake looked very professional.

At least I can say that I attempted the dragon cake.  Next time I'll just make a HUGE batch of Rice Krispies, mold it into shape & then frost.  Molding seemed easier than baking & cutting to fit.  I have to admit it was fun tho.  Especially coming up w/a wing shape.

A gallon of gasoline is more expensive than a pack of cigarettes. Hmmm, I wonder if I can convert my Volksy to run on coffin nails...

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with parsley sauce, goat cheese garlic mashed potatoes, Galena Cellars Niagra grape wine & Pie Boss's apple crumble topped with Ruth & Phil's sour cream/cinnamon ice cream.

Fmaily Fun had a cake decorating contest . apparently entries are closed now, but next year everyone should consider entering! There's some cute new ideas. One (i think best execution) looks like a slow cooker full of chili.

I used cream cheese frosting (the cupcakes are carrot cake) dipped in brown sugar for the sand, and the cacti were piped onto waxed paper with melted fake chocolate wafers.

Tracy, your fondant work is amazing. I love the cup cakes chocolate with pink frosting. Would you share the recipe is available? I have been looking for a few good cupcake recipes to bring to gatherings. Vanilla cake and chocolate.

Thanks.

Thank you so much, that's sweet of you to say. :-) Everything I know I've learned by watching TV, LOL.

I made those cupcakes with this recipe: my favorite chocolate cupcake for grownups (can also be converted to a chocolate chai spice cake with the addition of a teaspoon or so of chai spices). I say for grownups because it is very rich and very deeply chocolatey, and calls for 200 grams of top-quality chocolate and 8 eggs... I wouldn't use it for kids!

This is my go-to vanilla cake (though others have reported problems baking it as a layer cake, I've never had problems making it as cupcakes). And this is my new favorite all-purpose chocolate cake (and chocolate frosting).

Hi I love your pictures.  Great desserts..I love the cupcakes..what kind of topping is on the cupcakes.  Is it a buttercream or something else.  It looks so smooth yet fluffy at the same time.

Thank you! I have more pics posted here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/10031022@N04/sets/72157600786942062/show/

That frosting is just my version of standard "American" buttercream... butter, powdered sugar, very fine salt, a little milk or cream to make it smooth, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to make it not so cloyingly sweet.

hi Tracy,

I love your work and especially the cupcakes with the daisies on them.  What are the daisies made from?  Are they fondant?  They look so firm...I would love to try to make something like the daisies. They are so cute!! Also where did you get your cupcake tier stand from?  Great showpiece.!!

hi Tracy,

not sure if you have answered me and I just can't find the answer so I thought I would ask again :)  The daisies on the cupcakes are they fondant?  Did you cut each petal or do you have a mold for them?  Love them and they are soooo pretty.

thanks

Not Tracy, but I've made both fondant daisy's with a cutter and buttercream daisy's with a tip.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Thanks Adele and Ruthwells - Fondant would have looked really nice for something like this. Last year despite buying satin ice so much fondant got wasted (i guess people expect fondant to get wasted) and you need to buy the huge tub of satin ice - I just went with icing.

Hello! I'm glad you asked again, I am somewhat forgetful and neglected to come back and answer you.

The daisies are made of gumpaste, it is similar to dfondant but tends to dry much more sturdy. It's rolled out very thin and then cut with shaped cutters. Each petal is flattened and grooved, then two shapes are stuck together and the center pressed in. The whole thing is allowed to dry, then I pipe tiny dots in the center with tinted royal icing.

It's quite labor intensive but not tricky once you get the hang of it!
