I'm baaaaaack! (post #64842)

in

Took me forever, I know! But we're installed in our new home, and apart from a few minor things, it's starting to come together. I love my new kitchen :o). Just a few pictures to show you my latest endeavours! One is of a cake I made for my sister's 40th birthday (today), some of the kitchen and one of the curtain I made for the kitchen, which is quite an attention-getter ;o)

WOWZA! What a comeback! First off, that cake is amazing. Would you be willing to give details how you did it? Second, that kitchen is amazing. And last, you made that window covering???? It's beautiful.

Thank you Amy, it's good to be back :o). I've checked in every now and then but was always too tired to even post. I look forward to catching up (with your blog as well :o))

Sure I'll give details on the cake. It is a six layer chocolate cake (Martha Stewart recipe). I modeled the figurine out of fondant, and made my own from a Colette Peters recipe. It was very nice to work with and the taste was definately much better than Wilton's. I saw the figurine in a book from Maisie Parrish and just followed directions. I have to be honest that I had to make three heads before I came closing to liking it somewhat. Faces aren't my strong point. The flowers are fondant, made with cutters and dried on a flower former. Is that what you wanted to know?

Yes, exactly what I was curious about. I bow in admiration to you:)

Wish you were close enough to bake me a cake!  The cake, the kitchen, and the curtain are lovely.  You should be so proud.

Cake and curtain are gorgeous!
The cake I know I could never make. But, as a crafty person, I want to know more about the curtain. How is it made?

Thank you, thank you :o).

The cake on the curtain is cross-stitched. I looked on the internet for patterns for cake and enlarged a very simple one I saw. It is just three 'block' layers of cake in different shades of pink. I then stitched on beads for 'bling' and added ribbon loops between the tiers. I had some ribbon with small flowers and leaves, and just cut them and used them as individual little flowers and leaves. The fabric is simply white embroidery fabric, and my mom helped with the hemming on her sewing machine. I've made one for spring (with crocheted daisies by mom), one for summer (with ribbon flowers in cross-stitched vases) and am now working on Santa Claus. It really is a lot of fun!

I am beyond thrilled :o). Anything in particular you want to see? I 'm bad at taking kitchen shots, to me it just looks like a white wall of cabinets!

The figure was molded out of fondant and what you see is the third head ;o). The other two were ditched!

Oh, and I kind of withheld my most special news that will please you for sure, as a virtual grandma: I'm pregnant! Totally unexpected, after only 2 months of fertility treatment. We are so blessed :o)

Oh, congratulations on your expectancy. :) That's wonderful news.  I'm sooo happy for you. Your house was finished just in the nick of time. We want to see pictures of everything, BTW. Show it all off.

Oh Helena! Congratulations, what exciting news! :-)

The idea of American exceptionalism doesn’t extend to Americans being exceptional. If you excelled academically and are able to casually use 690 SAT words then you might as well have the press shoot video of you giving the finger to the Statue of Liberty while the Dixie Chicks sing the University of the Taliban fight song.                --Aaron Sorkin
