Ha! I love on-line shopping!

Biscuit's picture

Okay, so I'm working on a cake (just in the planning stages) for my neighbor's son.  A full-sized monopoly board, but highly personalized.  Anyway - I start planning it out, and I run into things that I know will be issues for me, and I try to find ways to work them out.  One of them is that a monopoly board has a LOT of writing on it, tiny writing, and piping like that is not my forte.  I CAN do it, but it's a LOT of grid work and writing.  Then there are things like all the little symbols - waterworks, railroad, jail, free parking, etc., which are being replaced with exams (railroads), the pool and the golf course (utilities), and a soccer goal for free parking, oh, and detention for jail, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do those.

I played with those "doodlers", little food-color markers, but they are too thick to do any small writing.  Then on-line I find the solutions to both of my problems (he!):  thin tipped food color markers (he!) and edible tracing paper!!!!  Oh, yes!  It's actually icing sheets, but so thin you can trace onto them with food color!!!  Ha!  And the markers are very, very fine tipped, so the writing should go well - I hope.  I also found a 20x20 inch cake board (impossible to find) that I will need for the cake.

I can NOT wait to work on this cake!  It's going to be fun!

I love on-line shopping - you can find ANYTHING!!!

Utterly brutal of you to post such a paean to online shopping AND NOT GIVE US THE WEB ADDRESS.

We want it, you know. We need it, and we HAVE TO HAVE IT.

I thought I loved online shopping too until my recent experience with ordering a tortilla press.  I ordered it, and paid extra for  it to be shipped in 3 to 6 days.

Long story short, did not receive the item for three weeks as they neglected to mention it was not in stock in the first place.  Took them two and a half wks to get it in and then  another 3-6 days in the post.

As well, I'm in Canada, they're in Canada too- but when I got my visa bill the charge was in U.S. dollars and converted to Canadian.  Hope you have  better luck!

I hope you complained and complained bitterly to these people, and I also hope that they removed the extra charges from your bill. What they did is a disgrace -- that is such bad customer service that they do not deserve customers.

I've been fortunate so far with online shopping. If there's a problem, it's been resolved, and politely, too.

I went to the Indian part of town and found a chapati press (that works brilliantly as a tortilla press) for under $10.

That's a great idea, but unfortunately it's a pretty white bread community here in Fergus.   Now that I have the press, I've only found time to use it once.  Isn't that typical!  I absolutely had to have it.

OK, so I've only used mine once too. What does that say about us, lol?

You're better than I am.  I had one, but cannot find it.  Thank heaven for ziploc bags.

I believe I ordered on Monday or Tuesday, and got it today.  They are awesome.  But the pens and the icing sheets - so cool.  Will let you all know at the end of the month if they actually work.

You need to take your temperature...you are probably ill or delirious.  You can't wait to start this cake..."this will be fun."  A monopoly board!  20 x 20!  Tedious work!  Can I send a doctor right over?  (What a cute idea, Biscuit, and I know you are up for it.)

Trust me, I'm not interesting enough for a blog! (G)

But I'll certainly try to take photos along the way and will post here.  This has to be done by the 20th, and I don't get back from vacation until the 18th so it will be a marathon cake-making sessison! (G) Expect photos the week after that.

You could do the individual spaces as separate "tiles" and start now... they'd last forever! Just cut the fondant or gumpaste into squares, let dry, and then decorate as you have time. It would certainly make the assembly a snap!

Fascinating.  Really cool.  I hope you can take pics along the way, would love to see the materials and application.  Not that I'm going to try it, lol, but I would love to see how it's done.
