Gingerbread House (more like a cottage) (post #63368)

in

Hey there-- Just wanted to share the pics from my gingerbread house baking session this weekend! It's really more of a cottage, LOL... but I really like this pattern, it's simple, easy to build and decorate, and easy to make. I'll include the recipe and pattern tomorrow when I have access to a scanner.

house1: three walls and a light

house2: under roof (and my friend Jen)

house3: all done, lights on and no flash

house4: with flash, for detail

That is really cute! But does the light melt the candy and frosting?  Looking forward to your instructions. What a fun family project!

I wondered the same thing.  It sure is a pretty "cottage."  Well done, Tracy.

So darlin' - I tried making a gingerbread house from a kit once...what a fiasco!  Maybe it would be easier if I baked it myself and didn't have to try to put it together with Royal Icing made from some unknown powdered mix, but this was a disaster...after it fell down for the third time, I gave up.  I admire anyone who can do this.

For the construction icing I used two egg whites, 1/2 tsp cream of tartar, and a full box of powdered sugar... the stuff has the consistency of spackle! Also, the gingerbread pieces are quite thick, which helps it stay sturdy. Decorator icing has three egg whites, which makes it much glossier and of a more spreadable consistency.

Great little cottage! I think I'll give it a try, too. The light does the whole thing justice. Quite clever.

How totally cool!   I am so very glad that the Gingerbread house bug has not hit me.  (yet- LOL)

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Very nice. I don't think I'll ever have the patience to put that much work into something that I'm not going to eat. ;)

Tracy, that is GORGEOUS.   I made one last wkend w/my 9 yr old niece, but it was the 'pre-fab' from Linens n Things.    She had a great time, which was the whole point.   But yours is seriously stunning.

Your cottage is very cute! DH purchased all the supplies for a gingerbread house, but we haven't been ambitious enough to start it yet!

Thanks, Fledge! :-) My teeth felt quite furry when the decorating was done, LOL. Even though royal icing tastes kind of foul, you just can't help but lick your fingers every so often... blecch!!

Very beautiful!  Did you put anything in for windows or did you leave them open?  One of these days I'll leave myself enough time to make one!

TracyK's picture

The windows are open... I think next time I will cut them a bit smaller, or cut two small windows per side, as the opening shows quite a bit of the bulb inside! Ome of those faux-flame flickering bulbs would be cute as well.

Hey, Tracy, you never answered my question about the heat from the bulb. Is it warm enough to do any damage?

Hey there! Not that I've noticed! The gingerbread is pretty thick, about 1/2 inch... but I also don't have it turned on all that often... a couple hours in the evenings. It's only a 4-watt bulb. :-)

I bought the housing, etc. at Michael's in the paint-your-own-Christmas-village section.
