COOKIES-Brownies,Bars & More (post #70516)

in

Cookies, Brownies,Bars and more-The new holiday issue is FANTASTIC!

I work for theTaunton press and we were so excited when we received this issue. The recipes looked so good and enticing that our department ,(for fun) decided to bake the issue. Not all of the recipes of course. We sent an email through the department to see how many wanted to particpate and bake one of the recipes from this issue. We received a response of 9 women that were up for the fun. The 9 of us picked one recipe and chose a date that we would bring it to work, to share with everyone. We have had two recipes made so far and I'm already so excited for the rest. What's fun about this is I may have not chosen one of the recipes to make because of the ingredients or maybe because of the challenge in the process of the recipe. What I have learned so far from the 2 recipes that have been shared is," Don't let the ingredients or the process stop you from making the recipe".

Ginger bars-Pg 47 was the first recipe shared. These were fantastic. Moist, full of ginger flavor and the baker (Suzanne)said they were very easy to make.

Toasted bittersweet s'more bars- Pg 105. These bars melted in your mouth. This s'more bar is definelty named right. I wanted "some more". Kristi said that this recipe took many steps but the end results were worth it.

We have 7 more recipes to try. I'm going to ask if  all the girls- (9 bakers) and even the tasters that didn't want to bake, blog about what they thought about the recipes and the process.

Stay tuned for the next to come.

So much Fun!!!

Hello,

I'm Deborah and I will be baking the Carmel, Pecan Brownies for Tuesday's (Oct 12) treat.  Recipe can be found on page 68.  Baking the brownies will be quite challenging-I've never made a carmel sauce before- But carmel and chocolate  is my favorite combination and I am very excited- Stay tuned for the results!!!

Unfortunately, I am feeling under the weather and did not bake the brownies- didn't want to spread my germs!  I am baking next Tuesday.  Keep you updated...Deb

Cookies (post #70516, reply #2 of 15)

Hi smilealways--

Ooh, I just scored this issue at Costco and it does look super.  Y'all should post some photos over in the gallery too, where we are Cooking the Issue for the regular, numbered issues.  I am going to try some of the candy recipes, to supplement my usual holiday caramels.  I very much look forward to what you-all post!  I will contribute too-- even though I am busy with the regular issues, they do seem to lack for cookies!

P.S. What do you mean not all of the recipes?  Cooking the Issue is quite addictive, once you get started....

It's at Costco?  I pre-ordered this and haven't received it yet.   What a bummer.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

So of course, this was in my mailbox when I got home.    The first page I landed on has Boston Cream Candy on it, so that is what I'll do.  This is strictly to make sure that it will be ok for shipping, not at all so I can sit here and eat it all myself.

But, but, it's SUPPOSED to taste like that!

Adele, do report back-- I was also eyeing that recipe.  Definitely see if it is good for shipping- quality control is essential!

What should I make? (post #70516, reply #3 of 15)

Hi Taunton folks,  Okay, I need to make something for a potluck and I want to try a recipe from this issue.  Someone else is making brownies.  So, what do you-all suggest?

Hi Pielove,

I recommend -The Blueberry streusel bars with lemon-cream filling on pg 64 - the blueberry/lemon combo is very delicious!!!

Thanks! (post #70516, reply #7 of 15)

Hey perkins43, that sounds great-- the potluck is in 2 weeks and I will report back.  The potluck has a meatloaf theme, so a light, lemony bar would be perfect.  I was also considering the ice cream sandwiches, which I have made before, but I think they would be a bit too showy.

Poppyseed bars (post #70516, reply #9 of 15)

Hi gals-- I made the Poppyseed bars because I had some seeds I needed to use up.  I posted a photo in the Gallery (see above).  If you want to post photos, just go to the Gallery, under the "Cooks Talk" pulldown menu to the right of the "Fine Cooking".  For some reason, you can't get there from the Forums, so go to the FC homepage.

Next I will make the ginger bars, or the lemon-blueberry.  You are right, this is a good issue.

Ginger bars (post #70516, reply #12 of 15)

smilealways, I tried the ginger bars and they are excellent, thank you for the recommendation.  I was going to yet another potluck and I needed something that could sit in the back of the car for a few hours.  Anyway, your baker (Suzanne) is right, they are very easy.  The ginger flavor was excellent, but not too strong.  My daughter loved them, especially the powdered sugar on top.  I saved a few back and may post a photo over in the gallery if they still look picture-worthy.

These were very easy to make and tasted sinfully delicious!!  I've gotten tons of comments on how tasty they were.  Definitely something to add to my Holiday baking repertoire!

I must admit that I've been distracted from the Cookies special issue by this article in the new issue (#108).  Anyone tried these new cookies?  I made the "Crepes Suzette" cookies and they were really good.
