I just tried the cream cheese chocolate chip poundcake - it's very, very good. Great texture, great tang. OK, it needs about 1/2 cup less sugar, but then I think that about pretty much all cake recipes.

I also adapted the "chocolate" piping techniques to create a Winnie the Pooh birthday cake for Berend. I'm totally sold - very easy, and it looks much fancier than it really is. I love decorations like that. No, the cake isn't assembled yet, but I'll try to post some pictures once it is.

I am going to try the banana cake this week.  I'll let you know what I think.  I am also going to try the "marbling" icing technique.  I can't wait to see how that turns out.

Also - I'm playing with that chocolate-decoration-piping thing, too, but with dinosaurs! (G)  I'll let you know how I do.

I'm so happy some of my dear, lovely friends bought me that book for my birthday.  I really love it.

I managed to find their website a little while ago -- here are some of their pix.  (The bakery is actually called Riviera Bakehouse, not Whimsical Bakehouse, so it's not so obvious.)

Wow. OK, my Pooh Bear cake isn't going to look as spectacular a theirs. Can I demand handicap points for it being my first try?

P.S. Thanks for the website, Ruth. I love looking at these. She comes up with such great ideas.

BTW, just found out I might have to go to Georgia end of April so the trip to NC is probably a no-go for me.

Well, yes, the aesthetic can be a little over the top, but that's part of the fun, I think!

Question for you Cookie (or Ruth), where do you get the vibrant colours for the icing? I've been very impressed by what I've seen so far, especially if they are as good to eat as they look.  I'd love to get the book, but I'm on a tight budget, I want to reno my kitchen; I'll check the library. Cheers!

Paste icing colors are much more effective than liquid... available at cake decorating/baking shops, or craft stores.

You say I'm a b---- like that's a bad thing.

Pick up the book at the library.  They give you formulas for making those vibrant colors - how many drops of which colors.

It's a really fun book.

Hi Case4, I use gel colors (Wilton and Ateco both make them), available at Michael's Crafts, among others.  I am particularly enamoured of an Ateco set my brother gave me last year which packages the gels in tiny squeeze bottles -- makes dispensing the color much easier that Wilton's little pots do.

Hi Nochef,

Not Cookimonster, but yes, we're discussing the book "The Whimsical Bakehouse."  It's been discussed here before (I must confess to being an early "booster" of the book) and there's been some general consensus that their butter cake recipes are outstanding.  The decorating style is a lot of fun, too!

Went right down to Cody's books and got it. I won't have a chance to actually build something till I get back to New York but am working out the plans now for my niece's (actually second cousin once removed) 6th birthday in two weeks, just enough time to read the book thoroughly. LOVED the leopard with roses pictured above. And a little more better [sic] searching uncovered earlier related discussions. Thanks.
