airplane cake help (post #65210)

in

I have mande many cakes , usually the non themed kind, like tortes, cheesecakes, buttercream sponge cakes etc. Now I have been asked to make an airplane cake for a stewardess.  I am hoping to find some ideas as how to make this cake.  I do not want to buy a pan for it since i will never probably use the airplane pan again.  Do any of you who have made theme shaped cakes have some suggestions for me as how to design an airplane cake?  I am up for this challenge but would love to have some ideas from you wise bakers out there.

I'd outline a plane on some cardboard and use a sheet cake (actually two layers), cut out the shape, smooth and bevel the edges, some buttercream or fondant as cover. Much easier IMO than a pan, which, due to differently thick parts will probably not bake evenly.

Hi , a quick question...did you have to use toothpicks or anything to keep the wings and tips in place?  Or did you just use buttercream to keep them in place?  The person that I am doing htis cake for also would like to have the planes colours in there. So bottom half is white and top half is orange....any ideas for frosting the plane with 2 colours?

thanks so much

I've never done this cake myself.  Someone else here can certainly advise you--Biscuit, Jennifer, etc. Check the 'show us your cakes' thread for experienced decorators.
