MODERATOR??????

Chiffonade_'s picture

Is this something that I missed? I have never been told after posting that a moderator would be looking at my message - for what? Good grammar, nasty words, political views?

WTF?

Yeah, same question from me. Chiffonade... better be careful... I think WTF stands for a bad word!

Well, I have to see what all the fuss is about. If it gets Chiffonade ruffled, can't wait until MC sees it!

Well, I'll be John Brown! We're being spied on by Big Brother! Amazing. That's the first time I've ever seen that on *any* site. Hey, Sean, WTF?

I haven't seen the Moderator business. But, I know Sean read messages even under the past format. He seems to be anti-censorship, which is a good thing. If he starts (do we really know if Sean is a he?) to censor, we can just up the level of obscenity until he stops.
Ok now I see it. I have no idea what it means.

That's us, alright! Obscene to the core. WTF does stand for Why The Filter, doesn't it? ;-)

Jean, I don't understand...what do you mean "Why these forums"?

Carolina's picture

*
Chiffonade,

Happy New Year! We're thinking of alternative meanings for WTF. After all, Big Brother is watching us now and we don't want to get sent to CyberSiberia.

I think the
i Ladies That Sew
are the reason behind all this. I bet they're over there right now
i knitting
together a plan to over
i throw
the government and all the while using bad
words like
i darn.
They always have been sort of a
i fringe
group.

Maybe it reads better Why THESE Forums? But I guess that as guests in Sean's domain he does have the right to a little control over what is said (make that HOW it is said).
Not all forum members are as well mannered as you kind folks are.

You know, I think one of my messages got nuked? I am not certain because I forgot what string I added it to...but I am reasonably certain it was this one...

It has begun.

Chiffonade,

I share your concerns. So far, no msg I posted has been nuked (knock knock knock on wood), but I notice that the "Moderator" has stated that "moderated messages cannot be edited, only deleted" or words to that effect. Therefore, it seems the "moderator" should alert us that "this is your last chance to edit" or something...

How do we know our messages are being moderated?

Maybe I've missed something about the process...wouldn't be the first time.

Still learning,

kai

I'd like to know about the "Moderator", too. Still am not sure why we need one or exactly what one does. Does anybody know the details?

MEAN_CHEF's picture

*
Yes, Sean knows the details but he or she has so far declined to respond. Wonder why. WTF. Who cares anyway?
You might want to try a large font obscenity in all caps to see what kind of moderating is really going on.
Happy New Year.

Chiffonade, I am sure it's you political views that are under scrutiny.

Kai, I think he said that posted messages can no longer be edited, that you have to delete the message and re-post because once it is on the board, that's it.
I found that out the hard way, and mentioned it in another forum, because I expected to see the edit button there too. Is this all as clear as mud?
In other words, once you click on OK, that's it.
Still trying to learn, too.

YOU GET TO GO FIRST, BIG DADDY!!!! After all, I'm just a sweet, little, innocent Southern thing, what do
i I
know about all those
i big, bad, dirty
words?

Carolina's picture

Jean,

I thought that edit feature was a real plus. Wish we still had that option.

Jean_'s picture

*
We can still edit, but before we click on OK.
After you hit "Post reply" you see a preview of your message, then there is a little "edit" button to push if you want to change/add something. Then you have a choice of OK or Cancel. Once you hit OK your message is on the board, then you have to let it stand or cancel and start over. Fun, huh? Now I know why we need a moderator. It's all enough to make sweet southern belles and damnyankees swear!!!!

wtf myself!

I declined to respond because it was a frickin' holiday, throw me a frickin' bone here.

ok. in response, the moderated messages experiment was just that- an experiment. i must reiterate taht i know next-to-nothing about this discussion software, and must learn by going where i need to go. unfortunately, we have no test server right now here at taunton.com, so all my learning must be done live. i was goofing around trying to figure out how to screen posts for genuinely objectionable language (just to keep the kids off here and on aol instant message), and inadvertantly activated a 'moderated review' screen for all discussions after all posts. sorry bout that, but keep your eyes open for more bizarre anamolies in the future, cos i ain't done tinkereing yet.

and stop being so paranoid. sheesh.

happy new year, all.

Sean,

It's a good thing God blessed you with a good sense of humor. Anybody else would have had a nervous breakdown by now with all us 'noids around.

WB Sean!!! :) You more than deserved a holiday and I am glad you took one (did a thong and jar of fudge sauce play any role??).

OK, I will admit, I might be a bit more touchy than most about being "moderated" because I don't like being edited and don't feel I need it. This forum doesn't give kids or jerks much room to do their damage. I will totally back you if a kid or jerk DOES manage to get in here and make a post and you nuke it. (At this point, I am not sure if one of my messages got nuked or if I mis posted it but I thought I was the victim of the moderator whoever he/she may be.)

In any case, welcome back and I hope you are well rested. If you are going to subject us to any more experiments, you will need all your energy (LOL).

Not sure why, but the last two times I tried to edit my posts, nothing happened. I hit the edit button, made the changes, hit post, and nothing happened...no changes. What happened? Anybody else have the same problem?

i'm an idiot.

I forgot to change the access list here at cooks talk, so everyone was subjected to that horribly buggy moderated-discussion setup.

I suck. i'm a horrible sysop, man that was stupid. i'm such a moron. arggh! damn., i suck. what a stupid thing to do , not change the access, man i'm NEVER gonna get this right...

Yes, ma'am - same happened here. It seems all you can do is copy the original message to clipboard, delete the message as it is shown from the message board, then start again from scratch. Paste your clipboard contents to the new message and do your edits, then click "post my message". I admit it's the long way but I will be damned if I let a computer have its way with me...HA! Take THAT, message board!!!

Chiffonade_'s picture

You do NOT suck...You did just what you set out to do, bring this message board into the next century. LOL@References to Chris Farley.

Re: The edit problem, I have had the same one. I have clicked edit and changed text, reposted and had the same message go up, unedited. See my response to Carolina to see how I managed it.

Kudos to you bud - we'll work out the bugs together. We will scream and yell and stamp our feet and you will fix them...seems fair, right??

Okay, Sean....good friend and fixer, I have a question. I was finally able to subscribe to Sprout Off, but when signing on to "read subscriptions", it sometimes kicks me over to Cook's Talk" instead. Do I need a separate password for the different subscription?
