Apple jelly - the lack thereof (post #36557)
Has anyone besides me noticed a distinct lack of apple jelly at the grocery store? So far I've checked Whole Paycheck, Dominicks & Meijer. I'm getting a mite curious(this is for the Thyme Scented Apple Galette recipe) if the shortage is everywhere, so I will check Jewel, TJ's & CostPlus World Market next, just for kicks. If I still strike out, I will wing it w/Sure-Jell & apple cider.

note to self: Skunks don't listen to Mother...where the heck is the hydrogen peroxide?
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with parsley sauce, goat cheese garlic mashed potatoes, Galena Cellars Niagra grape wine & Pie Boss's apple crumble topped with Ruth & Phil's sour cream/cinnamon ice cream.
I haven't noticed but I'd look at the cheapest market you have, not WF or Tj's.
Try a regular chain grocery.
Chiqui from way down yonder in New Orleans
Much better said!! Yes, Safeway, etc.
It's very strange. Meijer's & Dominick's (Meijer's=Super WalMart & Dominick's=regular grocery store) has Mango Chutney & other exotic type jams (don't ask why they put Mango Chutney in w/the jams) but no Apple Jelly. Mint yes.
So now I'm curious & will check out Jewel (another regular grocery), TJ's & a local ethnic market. Hopefully something will pop up so I don't have to wing it w/Sure-Jell.

Our mango chutney in our regular stores is not in the jelly department, nor is mint jelly. Are you seeing grape jelly, strawberry, etc. where you are looking.
I think you make a good point. I just bought red pepper jelly and it was with the pickly things.
Grape, peach-ginger, raspberry, strawberry, mixed berry, wild berry, plain peach, mint, mango chutney, fig preserves, blackberry & blueberry. No apple. None.
This is going to be a very interesting expedition. All in the name of scientifical research, of course<g>.

That is really interesting, and not really surprising, thinking about the flavor of apple jelly. I can send you some--I think!
I don't think I've ever heard of apple jelly, only apple butter.
Oh, now, you gone to bein' uppity, woman!! LOL Livin' in that air western state! REALLY!! YOu do need to get out more--just kidding. I'm going to look tomorrow, but honestly, there has never been a need to buy apple jelly. Talk about 'benign"!! But it has been sold. I'll take a look and see if it still is.
Well I am going to look for it when I go shopping this weekend, although my main grocery store is just completing a complete remodel, during which they stayed open. For the last three months every trip is an adventure as they keep moving things around. Who knows where the jellies/jams are now?
If I find it, though, what do I do with it, LOL?
What Tracy said--as a glaze maybe. It doesn't do much for me as a spread for bread. I looked at the Smucker's site, as did Tracy--but I didn't find it.
I looked at the Smucker's website and found the storefinder too, but was surprised to find they didn't have a store in their database within 20 miles of my place that sold it.
If you ask you grocery store manager, they will probably order some for you.

I use apple jelly to glaze fresh fruit/pastry cream tarts. Clearer and milder than apricot jam.
Edited to add: Smucker's still makes it, they even have a storefinder: http://www.smuckers.com/fg/pds/default.asp?groupid=1&catid=6&prodid=36

Followed the instructions and could not find ANY within 60 mile radius. curiouser and curiouser!
Meijers is far better than Walmart! They pay their employees fairly. Their Meijers Select brand is generally excellent. Their employees seem knowledgeable about the merchandise in their departments. Special orders are not a problem.
But I think you're right about the apple jelly.

I remembered your comments last night while I was shopping for a class I'm teaching tonite. I had to pick up some blackberry and apricot preserves and orange marmelade to use in a pan sauce for chicken we are doing tonight.
Usually you will find 3 or 4 different sizes of apple jelly from three or four different makers. Last night, there may have been 6 small jars of Bloom's store brand on the shelf. None from Smuckers or the other national brands.
Wonder what's going on.

(Please don't tell me that they are starting to make ethanol out of it!)
I would guess it is price point. If I need apple jelly --and it will be for a "recipe", not to put on toast--I am probably not going to pay what Smucker's will charge. Supply and demand, and maybe not much demand for their product?
I've never looked for apple jelly. My neighbour has a prolific apple tree, so I've got apple jelly coming out of my ears.
I believe in compost.
What if there were no hypothetical questions?
My local supermarket (HEB) didn't have it.
My aunt (well, we called her Aunt, but she was our Great Aunt) always made apple jelly especially for my sister. They'd both be sad to know it's not around anymore :(

Checked out my local Not-Quite-Whole-Paycheck-Thanks-to-the-$5-off-Coupon and there was no apple jelly. Apple butter, yes. Jelly, no. As a kid I used to love it. But then I also loved Jell-O. *L*

I hadn't noticed it's scarcity until you mentioned it but I did buy some fabulous Apple Cinnamon Jelly by Kitchen Kettle from Lancaster, PA. Great as a glaze on pork tenderloin but also enjoyed it on english muffins, childhood memories when the choices were apple jelly, grape jelly and once in a while strawberry! That was Mother's very limited repertoire and as kids we didn't know better! lOL!

I saw Kroger brand apple jelly at my local King Soopers this afternoon, but none from any of the national brands. Is there a Kroger or affiliate store near you?
Hmmmm, Kroger, Kroger, Kroger. Sounds more western to me. Don't think we have those here.
BUT there are Piggly Wigglys not too far way<G>.
It's time for a REAL change. Hobbes & Opus in 2008.
And while we're at it, deduct campaigning from ANY government official's salary when done on company, er government time. I'm tired of paying senator's not to senate.

"Let's all go Krogering!" Definitely SE Michigan and Ohio, and other areas...

Piggly Wiggly will have it. We had Kroger's for a while in Charlotte and NC but they left. They are in SC--definitely WERE in Ohio, but I think Meijer's has taken their place in Troy, at least. Kroger's is King Soopers in Colorado.
Isn't there still a Kroger's in Raleigh? We had them in Texas. It's the devil to move and have to get used to new stores, LOL. I'm like the old dog who can't learn any new tricks.

There may be. Harris Teeter just has SUCH a stranglehold on Charlotte, and most particularly the high end neighborhoods of Charlotte. There isn't another chain on the interior neighborhoods of Charlotte. They just can't compete.
We actually have a few choices here. There's Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Lowe's, and Fresh Market. Of course, during the summer, we have farmers' markets, and Elliott's on Linden has a great deli if you need that sort of thing. Closest Trader Joe is in Cary, along with Whole Foods. Wouldn't drive that far for either of them, but not a bad stop on the way somewhere else, particularly to pick up a few bottles of Two Buck Chuck!
